FL 4" exhaust: Aero Turbine Muffler vs. Vibrant "straight through" Muffler

Hey guys,

So i'm just about at the end of my build and its now come to finishing the exhaust system.

The way it sits now:

both downpipes meet and come together into a 4" exhaust system

all the piping after the downpipes will be 4" and i already have a Vibrant 4" straight through resonator for the mid-pipe

Now I have 2 muffler options that i'm looking at for the rear section

all the piping will be 4"

Option 1: Aero Turbine Muffler (4" in/out)
Round Mufflers: Aero Turbine Mufflers, 304L Stainless Steel Construction

How it works:

Option 2: Vibrant Performance Muffler (4" in/out)
TPV Turbo Muffler - 4" Universal TPV Turbo Muffler #1091

If i go with the Vibrant unit i'll just put it on as a finished piece at the end of the exhaust system

If i go with the Aero unit then i'll be making a dolphin tip exhaust...something like a larger Re-A style looking thing lol

As far as aesthetics go, i'm good with either option

my questions to you all:

1) has anyone had any experience with the Aero Mufflers?
2) are the Aero Mufflers a "sales gimic" or does it actually work?
3) what would you do given my position?

Thanks!

-VJ

if i were you, I would go back to 3" exhaust.............. oh wait, I did............... give I WAS 4" dp/mp/exhaust with HBP 2 mufflers. that thing was painfully loud. i mean hour after you get out of my car you feel like you were still vibrating and hearing the brap brap still. idk how it sounds on a smaller ported car but it was obnoxiously loud real fast. now i have a RB single on the back and its quiet as hell. (swaping on my apexi when i get the chance)

just my .02 and you know im rice... 4" does not belong on the street........

I'm definitely with you on that, but i wont be driving the car on the street too much anymore

It will go to shows and what not but its really to be driven on the track from now on...loudness isn't much a of a concern for me...worst case scenario i'll put some ear muffs on hahaha

I really wanted to try out one of the aero mufflers on my car when I was doing my 4" exhaust. The turbo diesel truck guys seem to think they make spool quicker by design. From what I remember it was better to have it mounted as close to the turbo as possible for best results though. Also I think only the XL version will actually make the car quieter.

In the end I am with Benny on this one though. I had a custom 4" built for my car and it was just too much. I hated driving the car bc it was so loud and I wasn't even boosting. Now I have one of the quietest setups available when cruising and the open wastegate is starting to bother me. Maybe I'm just getting old though.

Keep the 4" exhaust, the car is supposed to be obnoxious.

If it is too loud just add another muffler in the system or change it.

You won't be competitive in WTAC unless you run 4" exhaust with no mufflers man.

would be better off keeping it 2 3" pipes with dual resonators and dual mufflers, quiter yet still performs. problem is space under the FD, not a lot of room to make it work.

i tend to swap exhausts on my FC about once a year as the single gets annoying and i opt for the duals to quiet it down to stealth mode, performance is exactly the same. the turbo is louder than the exhaust.

WTAC?? lol

so its leaning towards just sticking with a conventional setup

it would be really cool to see someone with proper equipment test these 2 side by side

curacaosfinest: Don't know if this will help but I have a complete vibrant 4 inch exhaust system.

The engine is a 13b-rew full bridge with a cosmo upper and lower thats been ported to the max along with extra porting on the engine to port match the runners. Exhaust ports have been opened up a lot as well.

I'm running a 4 inch down pipe, to a 4 inch vibrant flex section, 4 inch resonator, another 4 inch resonator, a 4 inch race muffler (the little bullet looking one) and finally the 4 inch regular muffler. All the pieces are vibrant.

It is not that loud at all. I can talk on the phone in the car while driving on the freeway doing 75mph.

Here are some pics of the exhaust and a video of it on the dyno (made 703RMHP at 23psi on a mustang dyno, E85) so you can see how loud it is. Oh by the way the dump tube is vented and thats actually the loudest (2.5 inch diameter dump tube).

I'm extremely happy with the exhaust in terms of still being able to talk and not have my ears ringing after driving it for a few hours. Hope this helps.

Here it shows the down pipe, flex section and first resonator

Here it shows the two resonators

Here it shows the race muffler and the last muffler.

What's crazy and I know probably 99% of people on here will not believe me is that it is a stock Mazda internal engine. The only upgraded part are the 2mm RA super seals (the black ones). Everything else inside are stock parts. Yes it was balanced and yes it's a full bridge. We have over 6000 hard miles on it. Been using it as a daily driver lately. Getting 13 mpg highway on E85.

No it is not pinned, dowled, no rotor clearncing. No fancy coatings, etc. Its even running a stock factory fly wheel.

Rear end is a welded stock unit and the transmission is stock. It's my second unit as I have completely rounded off 3rd gear in the previous transmission. No worries I have 3 more standing by.

I have full 4" all the way back with a straight through muffler at the back and it was quite loud until I installed an Aeroturbine, no noticeable loss in power but holy crap did it make a difference. I think its important to note that there are two different kinds of exhaust "annoyance", volume and tone. The Aeroturbine does its job with the volume and it was huge. However, where I was really impressed was in the tone, it completely did away with any resonance that existed prior, the car sounds deep at idle and such and nicely transitions into a high pitched exhaust sound without any of the resonance that normally happens between those two ranges, at the same time the volume is incredibly lower. I have a friend with a 3" exhaust on his FD that is louder than my car.

I would go Aeroturbine all the way.

Thanks for the info!

Did you use the standard 4040 or the 4040XL?
In conjunction with your current muffler?

According to the manufacturer, the XL has an integrated resonator to help assist tone. As Prew noted, I imagine it would be more effective.

I just purchased a Vibrant to use in my new exhaust setup, it's an aggressive sound but that's what I'm going for.

I mounted it right in the middle of the car under the seats.

I think I went with the XL but it is still "free flow"...its did not look restrictive at all, nor did it feel like it. I actually felt no loss in power.
