3 gen vs. Porsche 911

Hey Guys...

How does a 350 - 360 hp 3rd gen. come across with a 320 hp new Porsche 911 or Carrara? Does anyone know the weight of these. Any performance specs?

thanks jc

The new 320 hp porsches:

Carrera: 2965 lbs
Carrera 4s: 3240 lbs

The Carrera should be good for 0-60 in about 4.7 to 4.8 seconds. Quarter in low 13s at about 105-107 mph.

The Carrera 4s should be good for 0-60 in low 4s with very low 13s at 106-109 mph.

I don't think any mags have actually done performance testing yet.

the fd will be faster, and probably handle better
(especially if it has some suspension work done,
which most with over 300hp will have).

if your an old fogie who cares alot about ride quality/comfort and "prestige" then the porsche will be what you'll want though.

People talk alot about porsches having
a very good "connection with the road"
which is probably true.

No contest...Porsche 996.

I test-drove a 296-hp 1999 version, and it was considerably more powerful than my FD. Remember the Porsche is normally aspirated, so there's no boost lag...just a linear rush of power.

I can only presume the 2002 320-hp versions are even more of an adreanline rush.

The sweet thing about the Porsche is that it's perfectly usable and comfortable transportation, but the 996 can also be used on the race track with very little done to prepare the 996 for track use!

As for handling, the '99 996 was quite neutral, with power oversteer on demand with your right foot.

Steering feel was excellent, and telepathic.

I really love the new ergonomics of the 996es, compared with the 993s and older 911 Carreras.

The 2002 Porsche 996 Carrera is a wonderful sports car, and worth the asking price! If I could afford a 2002 996 Carrera, I 'd have one!

Porsche GT2.. Thats all i have to say.. I think just having one of these in your yard that you could take to the track or a drive every once and a while would be nice. They suck at daily driving though from wut the magazines have said. And no i havent driven one although i drove a GT3R and the ride was preety rough. This was an all out track car though.

I drove a 2001 996, and I wasn't impressed at all Then again, my FD isn't exactly stock, either

An FD pumping out that much HP will spank the Carrera. I know because I probably have about 320 or so, and Carreras are NOT a problem at all. With that much HP under your built, with the right driving, you easily have a high11s-low12s FD and have a top speed of 180+

I was impressed, when I rode in a friends, with how well it connected with the road. We went through just about every twisty we could find, foot to the floor, and it is comparable to doing 30 mph in my moms buick.

Porsche's are nice cars. I don't think I would buy one though. I love them, but for the money I'd rather pick up a ZO6 (for the lower end Porsche's). For the higher end Porshe's, I rather have a new NSX, just because I like the look of them better.

If you want to see some Porsche handling, check this video out:

You'll walk away from him, but not by much if it's broken in and he knows how to launch. Porsche engines take forever to break in (20,000 miles) and just get better and better. The Carrera is an absolutely wonderful car and will best an almost 10 year old designed FD3S in any category - except bang for the buck of course!
The stock suspension in a new Carrera is incredible - almost telepathic - and it actually has a good ride too.
Joke time!.......What's the difference between a Porsche driver and a porcupine?......The porcupine has the ****** on the outside!

You have to also keep in mind that those hp #s for the porsches are flywheel #'s and I would assume the numbers you are talking about for the fd would be to the ground.

I drove the new 2002 Porsche 911 Carrera and Boxter S two weekends ago. They're nice for one part, but it's a different deffinition of nice for those of you who like FD's. I love the FD for its pure sports car set up. When you buy a Porsche, remember, you're buying the name, the luxury, and the performance. The price you'll pay on one will be a lot more than the price you'll pay for an FD and the work to get it up to equivalent horsepower figures. I didn't like the console as much when I got in the 911 because it wasn't a nice and tight cockpit like the FD. The car did offer lots of high-speed stabilty, as would be needed to represent its name in quality on the Autobahn. Just remember that if you're worried about comfort, sports cars may not be for you. Get a Mercedes if you want luxury performance. The 911 also has bigger wheels, tires, and meatier suspension full of bushings from 2001 technology underneath it which accounts for its handling personality. If you're upgrading and RX-7, you can get towards that level of comfort with the components that are out on the market now. I know the ride deffinitely feels a lot different than a tight, light sports car that has tough old shocks from 1994.

The FD3S does compete with the 911 on the GT circuit, but I'm certain Porsche doesn't send it out there to play without a turbo like all the other kids have.

If you're really looking to buy, remember, there's a lot of guys who get the German cars because they have the cheddar and they want to look better than everybody else. These guys don't last too long in RX-7s unless they really know and love cars. On another note, you'll see lots of rich man wives driving around in Boxters and Carreras because their man buys them any car they think is the cutest. But you'll never see a woman of that caliber working the stick and pedals of an FD. I'd stay with the RX-7. If you made the price difference between the two cars in performance parts. You'd slaughter the 911 and its big brother with the turbo. Its gets hard to spend more than $25,000 on parts for the FD unless you're buying multiple engines, body kits, and wheelsets. I say stay with your RX-7.

watchit MakoDHardie the wife read that and is pretty p-o'd. (wife speaking): Although your statement does hold true for some women..it doesn't apply to all women. When I choose a sports car its based on the car and performance not because my husband picked it out for me because it's "cute". I feel i can work the stick and pedals as well as any one else..and I enjoy it! So be careful with your comments..you just may offend someone

3rd gen vs 9xx

I have been working on (factory team 94, Leman's team 2001 )and driving 900 series Porsches since early 90's and have driven them in race trim that will scare the hell out of you when you squeeze the throttle to fast and wish you had not. I have a FD that I just got about a month ago + 82 that I have had for 18 years and a spec built 90's trim 930 with alot of motor, trans, suspension work. All of the cars are like fine women if you love them treat them right they will reward you with the thrill of a lifetime in there own way. opinions are like ****oles everybody has one. buy what you like to look at and love the feel of operating and don't worry about others opinions and you will always have that BIG SMILE on your face when listening to the screaming exhaust with your hair standing on endand your heart trying to exit your chest.
Both cars are great
Not that I am opinionated or anything

Let's face it, a Porsche is a Porsche - what you buy is quality and performance. No it doesn't have the acceleration of a Viper and won't outhandle a Z06 but it has the entire package. The 320 hp 996 I'm sure would outperform a stock or even mildly modded FD. Technology eventually will surpass the aging FD. Powerful N/A cars have always felt nice when driving but everyone would choose a 911 TT over it's 320 hp little n/a brother. The FD when modded correctly with proper suspension can be an absolute dream to drive. Even though 10 years old, the lines are still exotic. if the engine is built right it can be reliable. The exhaust note (with a hi-flo cat, NO MP) is second to none. turbo lag?? Yeah, maybe a little, but as I'm pulling multiple car lengths through each gear on the n/a 320hp 996, I'll smile all the way. 360 rwhp is enough to pull a few lengths on the mighty 911 TT. Not many cars have come out of that part of the world that has left a mark like the FD.

I totally agreed with you kwikrx7. If you drive a 991 turbo and wins a streetrace, that's because you spent 100 Gs on that sucker. But if you beat that 911 with your FD, that's some **** right there.

Well put. I wouldnt trade my Fd for any Porsche. The interior in those cars is so goddamn boxy lookin!
I guess you kind of get that with alot of German cars.
Where I agree the fit and finish in a Fd could be worked oI think the design and layout is near perfect. Nice contours and no slop. Fd is a better car in my opinion

Sorry, I forgot to mention the other half of the "rich woman driving hot cars" theory.... Though you can run across a lot of trend seekers with money going for trick cars, if you see a woman driving and FD3S or anything around the range of such performance, with a stick, of course...then I'd be pretty sure she knows what she's doing. We had a few of those girls in Taipei, but not many. Your type is rare, dear.

i used to be a car detailer at a Porsche dealership last summer. i was able to drive audi, bmw, mercedes, & Porsches to the gas station to fill them up and then detail them.

it was only a 2 mile drive......BUT......let me tell you i got every last bit of performance out of all the cars i drove there.

i did get to drive all versions of the 996 and of course boxsters and the boxster S....but i never got to drive the 996 twin turbo

let me just say that if i had money, a '97 993 turbo S would be my choice.....they are rare but very sweet.

It really depends on the driver.

From twisty track experience my lightly modded FD beat a PCA stock class prepared Porsche 993 Carrera S at Putnam Park 2 weekends ago. It's anyone's guess whether my friend and work colleague was pushing his Porsche 993 Carrea S as hard as I was pushing my FD Rx7 R1.

With that said, I could not stay with two other Porsche (also PCA club racers) 911s (both seriously modded, one a 930, the other a 993 Carrera S)...my goddam EBC Red Stuffs brake pads melted. I had to quit early with mechanical woes (oil puking all over the damn place), but my Porsche buddies were happily lapping until the very last minute of track time offered, driving their machines as fast their tires and brake pads will allow!

I think that's where Porsches will ultimately beat the FD Rx7. Porsche 911s offer consistently reliable high performance during the length of a lapping day or endurance race, where the Rx7 will be fast for a short while, but won't have enough to last the entire event, start-to-finish.

Here's a question...have you seen Cam Worth's Pettit Racing #75 FD Rx7 running in the top 10, or even finishing in the top 20? How about Brian Richards' FD Rx7? He's been out of the racing scene for some time now, no? Note that most of the sports car field is filled with Porche 996es in GT-3 or GT-2 trim levels.

If that's not enough to convince you of the superiority of Porsches, just listen to the way our FDs sound when we shut our doors versus how a Porsche 911's doors sound when you shut their doors (doesn't matter what year 911 either)...no contest...Porsches just exude quality...

Like I said...if I had the scratch...I'd have one...for now I'll just have to be happy with trying to keep up with the Porsche 911s at the track!

I hope to have a rematch with those 911 guys. I'll have my Type RS big brakes, Porterfield R4Es and a modified oil-catch can setup...during the April 26/27/28 Central Indiana Region Porsche Club drivers education event at Putnam Park...

Yeah...only 2.5-weeks left before I get to "race" the Porsche 911s again at Putnam Park

The ironic thing is I'll be instructing Porsche students in their 911s, as I'm an approved Central Indiana Region PCA, and will be an approved Mid Ohio Region PCA drivers ed instructor at both Putnam Park Road Course and Mid Ohio Sports Car Course...

Anyway, I'll be looking for Greg Fishman (of Louisville KY) in his black 993 Carrera S, PCA race car #621 at all the PCA events this year

Full report coming soon
