Cool 2nd gear @ 100mph!?!

Sup all,

Well driving around the other day minding my business on the fast lane just passing people @ around 70 on the freeway, with semi traffic, an Integra spots me and proceeded to initiate a race.

I'm thinking huh? usually they (Honda) type cars mind their business and whatever, but this one was really into it, a primered, different body colored panels GSR. w/typical non painted body kit and stuff. I remember how its the 'primer' type cars which are to be weary of...
So i'm like okay since i'm bored anyhow, and switch couple of lanes to get to a somewhat clear straight away (he had carpool lane which was free).

Took off in 3rd @ 75 ~mph on my bone stock 136,5xx mile FD w/ original turbos/motor, I stayed ahead the whole time...w/ me watching in the rear view to see how far back he was...@ around 100mph and traffic approaching, i'm thinking he's going to back off, but he didn't, so i'm like hmm okay go to 4th for about 2 seconds then quit before rear-ending someone. (hit rev limiter on 3rd while all this thinking is going on as well)

Well i guess since i was still looking in the rear view and probably sitting awkward, and thinking whether to go to 4th or not, I acccidentally went into 2nd gear rather than 4th! Something didn't feel right...no power, and the integra begins to pass me by (after a while, heh), I look down and see Tach pegged at 9000 RPM!!!!! I was like NO!!!! My FD has finally reached the end!?! Quickly go to neutral.

Listen for a while, rev engine a bit everything seeming normal, put back into 5th gear and take it easy, the car is fine! Woohoo, that was pretty scary, my FD is a fighter huh?!? I really think it will get 200k but i want a streetport already!

As for the Integra, it was a turbo GSR, so not too shabby huh? afterwards, he was making the turbo blow off valve noises while driving next to me, i would have raced again, but traffic persisted

so yeah 2nd gear @ around 100mph and still living, cool!
Laters,
Edgardo

Good story... at least YOU had a decent opponent. I miss-shifted like u while weaving through traffic cuz some little foo foo in one of those new body-kit corollas kept tailgating me....
I was being retarded

At that speed wouldn't you have to do some serious rev matching to get it to go into 2nd...I thought it would probably just grind like crazy until you were going slow enough for it to go in?

Hmmm

How long have you owned that car? I doubt its the original motor

Damn, you would think 100mph in 2nd would have been higher than 9K.....I guess the tach stops.

owned since 98, heh, its a 93, so maybe a reman--got it w/75k, but there are some indicators for a 136,xxx mile engine--many oil leaks, i think a injector may be leaking, compression @ 6.8s & 5.8s (IIRC). But i do believe i take okay care of the car, even if i do perform oil changes every 3000-4000 miles.

Yeah i thought it would be higher than 9K also, anyone have a good estimate of the actual RPM? around 11,500?

Laters!

TwinTurboTeddy has a pic of the PFC commander peak hold at over 10,000rpm from doing that downshift.

On stock tires and stock diff ratios... 100 mph in 2nd would be approx 11,200 rpm.

IMO, the most likely damage would be contact of the rotors with the side housings and bending of the eccentric shaft. I'm not sure if this damage would occur or be significant for a short time... but when you rebuild it, be sure to inspect the parts carefully.

yep, if you calculate the gear ratios, you were a little over 11500 rpm. Wow. Try that with a piston engine.

I did the same thing last week, but hadn't lifted the clutch all the way yet when I realized my mistake.

still, 9986rpm isn't shabby!

These RPMs are insane! I would feel really guilty if I did that to mine. My tranny is going, so I don't think it would allow me to go in 2nd at that high of an rpm. That's probably a good thing.
