1999 Black Cluster Swap To 2000 White Cluster

Hi guys! Anyone knows if this will be a plug and play to swap clusters or will there be more technical things involved? Would love some help as I want to replace my black cluster (1999) to a white cluster (2000) anyone have done this before? Thank you!

My cluster:

Should be plug and play since both have a boost gauge

Note that "99 backlight (version 5) is green and and version 6 is orange. So your hvac panel will not match. But it is not that noticeable.

All clusters are compatible with all FDs regardless of year and the presence of the boost gauge. Lhd or rhd, doesn't matter. It's probably the most universal part in the car besides the transmission....... and engine..... and diff..... but you get the point 😅

Not quite, haha.

Mind that the four harness connection plugs are attached to the instrument short and long harnesses differently for some reason between USDM and JDM. The JDM cluster does not have a check engine light, that position is filled by a engine heat warning light. In version 1 JDM Type X there was manual version offered and, as a result, the wiring for the cruise control uses a different set of pins.

As an aside, my friend nearly melted his dash, as he drove around with one of the cluster connectors dangling ( while his cluster was at Michael Gagne's) and it shorted out against the dash rebar. I supplied him with a JDM short harness to replace his melted USDM, and that way we found out the plugs do not match.

I got in an argument with another friend about JDM not having a check engine light. It turned out that at sometime a USDM cluster had been installed in his 1996. So his JDM had a check engine light, not that it worked.

I recently had a go in my cluster. I didn’t want to fool around with the mods you had to do to get a more modern white cluster to work with an older style FD (the white clusters having a boost gauge over an oil gauge)
I seriously considered it too but I needed a speedo that would go higher than the stock 180km/hr limit. So I waited to see if the re speedo would surface (which it did but I lost out on the bid.. )
However, since I wanted to stay factory parts, and I really wanted a white face cluster, I managed to find a Mazdaspeed cluster. Granted, the tach doesn’t start at the 6 o’clock position but at least I won’t have to fiddle with any additional grounds or wires.
literally plug and play.

Hi Neo!

That looks so clean! Can't wait to get mine installed on my free day! I wish mine would be plug and play too as CREEPENJEEPEN mentioned, luckily, the cluster I currently have has a boost gauge, and the white cluster I got also has a boost gauge too. I am not sure on the reasoning on why other models have oil and others have boost. Will find out soon and update this thread

I am puzzled that a KM based JDM cluster is plug and play in a miles based USDM car. Does not the calibration of the speedo (and odo) have to change?

We had Michael install a USDM 180 mph speedo in a "99 cluster and I believe, Michael said he had to tweak something.

Early FD’s (prior to the 99 spec facelift) all had oil pressure gauges.
Yours is 99 spec so it’ll be a direct drop in. Won’t have to do anything crazy.

You only had to do rewires on FD’s prior to 99.

You’ll be good.
