1994 Fd Vs. 2000 Audi A4 1.8t quattro what to buy?
#51
Id say get the A4 if you wanna be just satisfied. If you really want a car get the FD. I've never owned one, im only 16, but I test drove a 93 touring a few months ago and im hooked. People think young kids like us cant own cars like these because we cant afford upkeep, or we shouldn't because we dont know how to take care of them. Honestly, if you want to own one, and you set yourself up right then you can. I own a 94' 3000gt right now which ive had since I was 14, and I bought it pretty much on my own, minus $500 from my parents. I test drove the FD and now im trying to sell my current for one of these. I grew up with a background of cars, and my dad owns a aftermarket car part buisness, so you could say I got a "headstart", but you seem about as well setup from what youre describing. I'd recommend not asking for peoples opinions, because they aren't the ones that matter. Do research, and figure out what YOU want in a car, then you will be able to choose, if you still can't deciede flip a coin, because no one else can really help you choose the right car for you.

Haha, I can tell you all about the good and bad points on Audi's. I am a Audi technician at a dealership, yes, I have replaced plenty of A4 1.8 engines due to oil sludge, mainly due to the original 10K scheduled maintenence with non synthetic, and they orginally only held 3.8 qts of oil...now they are updated to a bigger oil filter that increases oil capacity to 4.3 qts, and require synthetic. The V6's dont have the sludge issues, but like a previous person said, they do have alot of issues after a while and when new, just like any other over engineered german car. The RS4 is due out in 07 I believe, with the 4.2 FSI V8 making 420 hp. The RS6 was a limited production twin turbo V8 making 450 hp. Anyway, the Audi's are nice vehicles when in warranty, hehe, but when they go out, you must have the funds to keep them running or be able to work on them. Most common things that go wrong on the A4 1.8's are coolant temp sensors, upper and lower control arms, tie rod ends, cam adjuster seals leaking due to clogged suction jet, vaccum lines ripping to the secondary air valve or turbo bypass valve, maf sensors, and in higher mileage, oil pump sludging up, turbo failures, and broken timing belts from tensionsers failing. Also, the ABS control modules have been failing and not communicating with the can data bus system, and there is a repair kit out for them now, before you only could get the whole hydraulic assembly with module for 1200 bucks, now, you can get the module(the part that actually fails) for 550 bucks. The A6's again leak oil, cats go bad, tail shaft seals, rear diff seals, water pumps go on them more often, the window clips break and cause the windows to bind, the bi turbos have coolant leaks from under the intake manifold from the secondary coolant pump, etc...I can go on and on and on as well, but you get the point, **** fails, its man made, and car companies are in it for the buck, so if they can save on parts being cheap, they will do it, be it a Audi, BMW.etc....anyway, If you want some info on any audi, just pm me as I dont check back the threads that much.

like i said in the other thread..both cars are problematic..but if i had to choose, i would choose the FD since the drive is much better/more faster and IMO the styling will always be there for many more years to come..
and like someone said, audi's are really designed poorly..just because the new ones look "cool" and it has a "cool" audi badge, doesnt mean its a great car..german cars are really poorly designed..yes even bmw's and benz's..pieces of **** if you ask me..i dont care what type of technology they bring to the automotive table..
and you want a 00 1.8t?? thats like settling for a civic dx..at least get an s4 if you want to start off on a better standpoint..even though those cars are no better with stock turbos failing early in life and engine problems out the ***..

Thank you for all that information.
I did know all of those issues, besides the ABS module you mentioned.
I will made a post on audizine about it tomorrow.
thanks once again for the time and tips.
For the DV , i wanted to go GFB Hybrid DV/BOV, and then n75j valve.
i probably will PM you, thanks. I do not even know any audi techs over on the zine.

Thats cool, you can pm me on any information you need, I actually like working on the A4-A6's, I hate as with any other Audi techs the TT's, which stands for touring trophy, we call them touring turds, and the new A8L, with its pita battery management system, Fiber optics, and all the 75+ control modules with fifty million value blocks and adaptations that the germans never give us half of the information on it and what they do. And any kind of front engine work the bumper and front lock carrier (front core) has to come off and into service position. The S4 are a major pita to work on, I just did a set of turbos under warranty, yea fun stuff. common issues with them are the factory EGT sensors fail, the boot on the throttle body rips, and the syncho;s go out on second gear alot on them.

Cant afford an S4. id say the s4 is worse than the Fd when it comes to problems. the owners will tell you too.

that's great, but he openly said he'll be waiting tables.
and get the FD and make it your project car, while making the probe your daily driver.
