100 octane vs. denatured alcohol
i see that denatured alc. seems to be the most commonly used stuff for smogging cars. how does this compare to 100 octane. do they at all??? just figure it would be so much cheaper to run 100 octane then it would to run gallons of den. alc. went to the store and it was 3 bucks for a pint. any insight, or is denatured the stuff.

"denatured" alcohol typically has water in it, so be aware. Also, are we looking at propanol/isopropanol? I wonder about all the different types of alkyl chain alcohols. I can get some REALLY pure stuff through work. Hell, I could order pure eight carbon chain liquid octane (pentane and hexane are pretty volatile, but octane is nice liquid!) Just pour it in? Hmmm... we need a little disclosure as to what's really IN gas, don't we?

okay, let me clarify that a bit. 100% denatured alcohol is what i have. there is no H2O what so ever. now with this being said, does the alcohol just slow the burning process like the 100 octane or what?

denatured alcohol is used to help pass smog b/c when it burns it doens't have the bi-products. It also makes your car run like sh-t and doesn't add performance but takes away from it. You are wanting to use xylene or toluene which have 117 and 114 octane respectively.
