If no rotary powered sports car comes along by 2020, then I'll most likely look really hard at the new Supra.
I'd say that the only thing that COULD save the rotary (in the sense of the rotary applied as the prime mover in a sports car) is the 100th anniversary of Mazda coming in 2020. Without a rotary sports car, how would Mazda celebrate that? A special paint job and commemorative badges?
That is unless the new HCCI tech quickly proves to be a huge success and Mazda starts making a lot of money either by selling cars with that tech or by licensing that tech to other manufacturers.
Or maybe it was Toyota one of the shareholders that said "no"...

We can only hope that a range extender is a prelude to a real rotary sports car. They can spread the development costs across multiple vehicle platforms. All the 13B engines reused most of the same dimensions and tooling, which kept cost down, and it wasn't that different from a 12A either.
Unfortunately everybody is buying crossovers. If they can stick a rotary in a high volume crossover it would help pay for what we all really want.

So, I went back to take a look at Mazda's financial results (link, page 12). It seems like the main thing that pulled Mazda's financial numbers down last year was the appreciation of the Yen with respect to most other currencies. The single most problematic exchange rate was the one with the Euro.
So perhaps that's one of the reasons that caused the less-than-hoped-for financial results mentioned by Fujiwara.
On page 16 there is a table about the FY2018 forecast, and it lists the assumptions about the exchange rate. Currently the USD / JPY assumption is very close (107.8 vs an assumed value of 108), but the EUR / JPY is quite off (129.8 vs 118). This should be good for Mazda, as it means that Mazda earns more Yens per each Euro it gets.
So, maybe, FY2018 may be somewhat better than expected, and it was already expected to be better than FY2017...
Also, if I remember correctly, Mazda should start selling diesel engines in the USA in late 2017, so that could help sales too. Perhaps not so much for FY2018, but certainly for FY2019.
So maybe we've reached the bottom and there's a recovery ahead. Which might include a place for the rotary...

Yet another article, this time saying that there WILL be a new concept in Tokyo, "an evolution of theme of the RX Vision". Even though it's not 100% clear to me whether the new concept will be an "RX Vision 2" or a trasposition of the RX Vision style to a non-rotary vehicle.

Eek, Maserati doesn't really scream "lightweight and fast" like an RX car should. Guess we'll wait and see, though I was hoping for just a more production-ready version of the RX-Vision.

Constant threat
I think we'll see some concept cars from time to time but senior Mazda management has confirmed there WON'T be a production car...ever.
WHY do we keep seeing these posts about, "NEW RX-7 IMMINENT!"?
Mazda has neither the resources nor desire to bring a rotary powered car to market, plus it would KILL their C.A.F.E. ratings and cost them thousands of dollars in fuel penalty taxes on each car they build.
There will never, ever be another rotary powered sports car from Mazda.
Period.

^^It has always amused me when people on here talk about Mazda's resources as if they are part of the board of directors and are privy to internal financial information. The fact is no one on here truly knows what Mazda's research and developments projects are, nor have an idea of how much capital they allocate for the funding of such projects. The only thing they know is final profit margin based on Mazda's corporate plan (basically profit after special projects, overhead, manufacturing costs ect..).

If the volumes aren't too high, the CAFE impact of a less than economical rotary would be limited. It can also be offset with electric cars or highly efficient internal combustion engines. How do you think the Big 3 get away with selling so many big trucks? They bump up the fuel economy on the trucks a bit, but they make up for it with the rest of the fleet.

Rotor Head Extreme

Tell me about it. Their Sky-Active X (compression ignition) is about to raise those CAFE numbers quite a bit therefore leaving a better possibility of a rotary return. Makes no since for Mazda to keep applying for patents on the tech to not eventually release something.

Unless the next rotary car is intended to be a 4-door car (like the Rx-8), then the new concept will not be about the rotary

In my deepest of dreams, the sports sedan teaser image Mazda released will be a 3-rotor SCHCCI skyactiv-R full hybrid w/electric supercharger and rotary range extender. Call it the Rx10. Follow this up with an enthusiast coupe' version that ditches the range extender, 1 rotor and swaps the full hybrid battery for a supercapacitor (to drive the electric supercharger). For good measure twin-charge it by adding a turbo for the mid-high end while the e-supercharger provides lagless low end boost. The cap would be recharged via Mazda's i-ELOOP regen brake setup. Call that model the Rx9, and let the pant-crapping commence. ..That's my fantasy Mazda rotary revival reveal.
