Registered FD #'s by state.

Anxiously waiting on bring the car into Gotham just to have it checked out and some misc reliability mods done to my 7 before it come out to Kauai, HI. There's was a MBP one running around last year, but it's was driven by an older lady so we've speculated it's gone w/ no one seeing it for a while. A white RX-7 popped up on the islands about 6 months ago, and a silver one popped up w/in the last couple months. Now I'm awaiting my black R1. Now we have a dyno that just came to the island w/in the last 5 months, so it's time for everyone to try to learn tuning by something other than the color of the spark plugs. Too bad it's a challenging car, but who knows...maybe we could have a S.Kan tuning session. If everyone on the island gets a EMS...yeah...like that'll happen.

Well I guess mine would be in this numbers but Its not currently registered as Its not currently driveable but it will be in the next couple of weeks . I was surprised there were so many in Georgia Ive never seen anywhere near that number here, maybe 25-30 at the most.

no time - that's why

you ask why would 2000 have registered RX-7s without getting them on the road?
Time, baby, Time. My 94 broke down middle of last year. I'd been commuting fr Fl to DC and only home on the weekends and could just never get enough time to get around to it. Then, deployed to Iraq this year, now there's no one to deal with it. So, when I get back, I guess I'll sell it.
Real reason, love that car! Bought it brand new in Dec'94, have driven all over the country, wrecked it, slept in it, and just about everything else, can't bring myself to part with her.

Where did you get this 8000 number?
It costs money to register a car ($150 or per year for me in CA, for example) and the registration expires in a year or two. In many states, a car has to be inspected and/or smogged before it can be registered (another $50-$100).
Why would close to 2000 people per year register their car if they had no intention of getting their car back on the road. (And all of these people would have to come from states that did not require either a smog or safety inspection before registration.)
These numbers are as close to golden as we are going to get.

Steve, I think the count was based on vehicles currently registered w/ the state government at that given time, so I'm pretty sure that unless someone managed to classify their FD as a permanent truck (lol), none of 'em were simultaneously registered in two states

sure you can. If the car is already registered in X state, I can purchase the car and register it in Y state. Both X and Y state will still show the car as registered until the registration expires.

Now how many were sold by in each state and by type - touring, r1, r2 - manual / automatic? You would think Mazda may have that data. I know I read it someplace but could not find it? Certainly you would have movement from state to state but the data would provide some relevant reference for attrition and rarity. Lastly a good friend was cruising through Wyoming with his FD a few years back. The officer that pulled him over had never seen the car and did not know what it was-now I know why....
