Interesting info, thanks to everyone for going after it.

If my numbers are correct and assuming a linear straight line, we are loosing over 30 per month. I find that number alarming and really hate to see PPL gutting FDs and throwing to the scrap yard.

Are the younger guys totalling the FDs? One clue would be to look at the attrition rate by model year. Assuming that the '95s are the most expensive and the '93s the least we might assume that the younger drivers are buying up the '93 and would see the greatest amount of recent loss on that year. I'm too lazy tonight to crunch those numbers.

Yea...controversial or not, the fact remains that in '92, Mazda Headquarters gave Peter one of the first 100 FD's (which were for racing and/or promo use only)... #22 to be exact (I've seen it...the blue and silver racecar. Amazing machine). And also, if I'm not mistaken, the driver Mazda used to get the 0-60, 1/4 mile, braking, slalom, and other figures touted in US magazines was none other than Peter himself, having already had an illustrious career racing rotaries prior to the advent of the FD.

AFAIK, Peter sold the physical location he had at Manassas, and sold PFS to Ray. Peter's building some business at the corner of Centerville Rd and Manassas Drive (literally a mile from the old shop), and I *think* it's gonna be a car sales lot.

if peter was driving the fd for the tests... magazine times had 0-60 mile times of something like 5.2 or 5.3s. 1/4 mile times were off of stock claims as well. the magazines probably ran their own tests(on production cars) and weren't able to get times as quick as peter / mazda's results.

I started collecting names and numbers about 4 years ago of anyone with a FD. Then I started the Mile High Rotary Club in Colorado. I am really surprised theres a 140 FD's in Colorado....I thought I found most of them already.

 

Yeah arizona doesn't have that many, I know of like 5-6 people locally. I hardly see them on the road.

 

Subtract one from Missourri, add it to WA state

One of the 2nd gen guys in Wy tried to buy that FD....he was his next door neighbor. Unless that FD wasn't registered.

 

you can delete two from california and add one to kansas.

Add (1) more to Texas. My 93 BB R-1 is registered and driven regularly so it should already be in the OCt. numbers. However, I also have a 93 VR Basethat is not currently registered.

I also parted out a rolled 93 SSM Touring earlier this year. The body went to the crusher. RIP. It's ashes...I mean parts... are being spread all over the country.

I have one of the registered ones that isn't on the road. I think you have to register to change ownership or get insurance started???

 

glad i'm one of the cool people in AZ. add a 93 to the list as of Dec 05. Just finished 2 years of repairs. Then my clutch release fork, hood release cable, throttle cable, and clutch slave broke since then! When will it end!!

 

I don't know why its so hard to believe these numbers..

Lets compare...

93 FD - 9,976 produced - 6,772 registered = 67.883% of the produced FDs are registered.
94 FD - 3,403 produced - 2,607 registered = 76.609% of the produced FDs are registered.
95 FD - 500 produced - 417 registered = 83.400% of the produced FDs are registered.

Total of 13,879 FDs produced and 9,796 are registered = 70.581% are still on the road.

I guess by this stat, if you buy either 94 or 95, your change of totalling the car is far less.
Just seem kind of weird to me... Also when you count all the track only cars (not registered) and FDs that are out of commission and just sitting around until it runs again (which I have one sitting for about 2 years). I'm guessing the number will increase another 2 to 4%... exceeding 10+K in numbers.

 

Makes perfect sense to me. '93s typically go for cheaper prices than 94s or 95s, which usually translates to mean those 93s fall in the hands of the younger crowd which doesn't have much to spend. They also happen to be the least experienced drivers of the bunch.

It might be true.. but its not that much of a difference between cost of 93 and 94 or 94 and 95.

The point I was trying to make is, it seems like there is some sort of weird calculation done instead of actually number of cars registered..

I just can't see 2 years in difference and only because 95 are rare, accidents or failure rates are far less. Only way I could truely believe these numbers will be to see which VINs are registered and when it was registered.

I also know at least 4-5 cars in birmingham alabama that haven't been registered in at least 2 years. That's about 4% of total number of registered FDs in AL.. And I'm sure in whole state, there are at least 10 or so FD thats not registered... Its just hard to believe there are almost 10k out of 14k cars are still around... in almost 14 years later...
