Question coolant dumped, splashguard and cooling...HELP...

hi,

my coolant dumped on me yesterday, and i need to know why. here's the weird part. i latter put in water and filled the car up and it then ran fine, no leaks. i takled to some people they think it might be the thermostat, but i wanna get some more opinions. i have a 93 R1 pretty much stock and i already have a replacement AST from Pettit.

also about the giant splashguard that covers the radiator and other cooler, has anyone driven without it on, have you experienced problems with rocks destroying the fins??? i know the scundinari site has a link that says you should tape something up, but i have no idea what they are talking about, anyone have pics, or a better explanation???

thanks,

jon

mine spewed out of the overflow all over when my thermostat went. I would start there and see what happens sfter thet. They are cheap and not that hard to install. This is also a sign of a bad seal, but I wouldn't stat worring until you cahnge the thermostat. Also this overheat could have damaged a seal, hopefuly not. good luck

is it only when the car is hot, or is there a steady leak? knowing that will narrow your search a bit. after you refilled it with water, did you actually drive around for a while to see if it was leaking, or did you just turn it on until the temp gauge came up?

is it possible you just got really hot and boiled over a bit?

my car recently started leaking coolant only when it was hot. turned out to be one of the tanks in the radiator (which, I might add, are plastic) cracked, so when the thermostat opened and started flowing coolant through, I got a leak, but not otherwise. I needed to get a new radiator - had it installed on Monday and things have been fine since (as far as cooling goes).

don't know about the splash gaurd.... I'd keep it on - you'd be surprised at how much water the tires displace and where it gets shot.

Splash guard? You talking about the undercover/tray that bolts beneath the car. One important function it aids in is proper air flow through the fins!!!

My old radiator burst a seal at the tank and would only leak after I shut the car off.

it was pretty warm that day, approximetely 90degrees and i wasn't moving all that fast so i guess the radiator did not get enough air to cool it down. it only happened when the car was hot on that day. after i refilled it it was not leaking anymore. so it seems like it is most likely the thermostat. does anyone know approximetely how long it takes to replace it???

does anybody know about this http://www.scuderiaciriani.com/rx7/r...r_ducting.html and how it suppossed to look, ie does anyone have pics of the mod.
