Honda makes good motors.

Heh, I know exactly what I am saying and see no reason to "watch it." Fact is there are far too many stock Honda Civics that remove their hubcaps (to look more "racier" <---if that's a word), cut their springs, put on this irritatingly loud, raspy, metallic sounding exhaust (not a deep tone, but one that sounds like a bunch of screwdrivers placed into a metal tumbler) and think that they're the fastest thing around. Now sure, there are plenty of cars around that will smoke mine and I am not saying me and my car are kings of the world, either. Just stating the obvious (at least for my area and what I see around all the time). So watch yourself if you feel your toes got stepped on there or something, amigo.
yup!! you're absolutely right about the number of retarded honda "racers" out there, the one's w/ the cut springs, exhaust... etc. you've named it all. But this is just an observation about what people do to their honda's, and not reasons why you think honda motors are lawn-mower engines. In my eyes, honda makes the best 4-stroke engines in its class. Not only are they extremely reliable, they're simply awesome motors to beat around on a race track.

Don't worry, i'm all for rotaries. I just don't wanna see people who are so into rotaries (and rightfully so) that they refuse recognize other good engines.

sigh.... i just wish that there are more car manufacturers who would implement rotary engines in their cars. Competition produces quality. 4-stroke engines are more accepted because generally, they're more reliable. But in my opnion, this is because everyone has been engineering 4-stroke motors for the past centuries. Just imaging the rotary engines we can have if mazda isn't the only guy in the industry who's engineering it........

Yea, I agree with ya on all points there Howi. But then again, being more unique (as far as having a rotary engine) is rather fun don't you think?

i went 120 indicated speed, but I wasn't topping out. At the time though, I had non-working 6PI and VDI, so I was missing some ponies. I think the tranny might max around 145 if I was lucky. The GTUs wasn't designed for topping out. At that modest speed of 120, I was above 6k in 5th.

138 (top of fourth)... and pulling hard I've been too chicken to wind it out in fifth, but I'm pretty sure it'll do 165-170 or so (~330rwhp = redline in 5th )

Hello all - new poster here.

I bought my '91 vert 5 years ago in San Diego. At the time, I was able to get 165mph with the top up, and around 155 topless.

Since then I've moved to SF, and my water seal has popped, and I discovered this forum. For the last 6 months, my engine has been running with the temporary "Block Seal fix" while I figure out what to do..

Given the state of my engine I've been hesitant too fast. Nevertheless, exceptions must be made when some yo-yo in the road needs to be put in his/her place. The last time that happened I managed to get my car 145mph with the top down going uphill on hwy 101.

Being my first post and all ... I'm hoping you can forget my newbie-ness and let me ask a dumb question:

The 88-91 FSM doesn't seem to have the correct wiring diagrams for rx7s with air bags. Do any of you know where I may be able to find a manual that covers these models??

Thanks,

-Paulo

Not to call you a liar, but there is no way in hell a stock (or even modded for that matter, unless turbo) vert could go 165. The top speed of a stock FD is ~163. So if you saw that speed on your speedo, it is way off.... The top speed of a stock 'vert is ~130-135MPH

Humm ... I've never calibrated the speedometer but since I'm using everything stock I never doubted it. Heck at the time I was bummed that I got nowhere near the 160mph that the speedometer hinted I could get.

I do have to say that at least when it comes to speeds of up to a hundred or so I think my speedometer is correct.

After reading your response I Looked some quick specs ... In a report in Car & Driver I read that the a TII with 182hp had a top "tested" speed of 145 ... doesn't the conv have 180hp but slightly tighter gear ratio?? So with enough cement ... my result could actually be right, no?

humm ... I just went downstairs to look at my speedometer and it tops at 160 ... for some reason I had it in my mind it topped at 180. I guess I could be equally wrong with respect to how fast I remember pushing this car.

It would suck if I just lived a fantasy ... but I guess it is possible. I guess now I have an excuse to go out there and see what this car still has left.

-Paulo

Perhaps you mean KPH, not MPH.

Or perhaps you have an alterntive engine in your car.

But I too must raise the BS flag, if the car is even remotely close to stock (or even with a 13b-REW in it).

The 91 'vert only had 160HP and 140Ft/lbs of torque, it also weighed over 3100 lbs and was the heaviest RX-7 ever made.

The gearing was almost identical to the Turbo with the exception of 5th gear which was .691 on the 'vert and .719 on the Turbo.

There is no way stock you even hit 130 MPH with that car.

*edit
Infact Mazda's claimed top speed on the 91 'vert with the top up is only 124 MPH.
**end edit

LOL What better way to join a forum than to start an arguement. huh?

Well, I'm no expert in these cars performance capabilities. I drive this car because I love it not because I think it is very fast.

As I stated I could be wrong. If so, I apologize, I merely posted what I remembered.

No harm done or hard feelings.

Welcome to the forum, from a another 'vert owner.

I buried the needle on my 87 turbo/holley automatic O/D Off. I let go since there were no more numbers to sweep.

136 in my 7. If you really want to experience a floating feeling, hop into an RX2 and wind that baby up to 100. Thats one of those feelings where you hope your next move is not kissing your **** goodbye.
