Yoohoo belt myth or fact
#27
I went and got a 3L220 and had no trouble installing it. But mine fits pretty snug. It now eats my alt belt though. After running it for a few seconds with the 3L220 installed, the alt pulley was too hot to touch and the belt was beginning to smoke. I shut it off and the belt is still fine, but I have a long way to go to hope someone has the alt belt I need. What worries me is that my alt belt has some slack in it and it's doing this. Should I loosen it with the 3L220 on? I have to work tomorrow and I want to try and find a way to solve this without cutting it off.

Loosened the alt belt to 11/32" deflection and it solved my problem, until late last night when I
slung it off. The yoohoo belt was undamaged, and thankfully so was everything else. It saved
me, but I don't want to keep slinging them off.
I hear it is relatively common to eat through belts faster with this method, but in the meantime, I
want to know if there is any other way to do it. Maybe just a hair less deflection? I had it at 1/4"
and it was pretty bad. It also rained last night, and I often get alt belt squeal when it rains. I do
have the plastic air dam under my car still.

My experience when the alt belt heats up and/or breaks = alignment of the alternator.
Usually it's the alternator bracket that causes it, I had to tweak mine ever so slightly to have it aligned correctly.
