SO SKIP A FLAT HOOD
It's not worth the hassle

you are looking at it wrong. just stare at it for a while and you might get it. also, logically imagine how the air would flow over the hood. call me when you figure it out

I also vote for a "scooped" hood. Preferably a reverse style. Please look down at our first piece of evidence...

Exhibit A: Carbon Fiber IS lighter than the aluminum hood. But to go through the trouble of gettting a custom hood, do you want it to look stock?

Exhibit B: Stock Turbo 2 hood is the same idea. Already pretty light, why waste the time to make it carbon. Maybe if we get our first buy in to work out then we can get these next?

Exhibit C: Turbo or NA, the reverse scoop will work very well, and look very good on both.

Exhibit D: Cuz they are purdy, and no one has them.

I dont think too many people have a border or panspeed hood they can get a mold taken from, but what if we put our heads together and all split one? Have the mold taken, then we all get cf hoods made? Ehhh Ehhh? It could be done.

 

I dont need an original to take a mold from. I can make the mold nearly identical freehand. But I dont have time to do it now. Maybe by/during summer.

 

I started a thread a while back about hoods for the turbo II. I have a mold built and one prototype finished. the car is at the paint shop and should be finished later today. The shop who built the turbo II hood already makes a flat hood for the N/A second gen. these are made of fiberglass and are built to be as light as possible and are smooth finished, so painting is recomended. I am trying to get a firm price for the turbo II hoods for a group buy of ten or more. once ten are bought and paid for the price will be the same for anyone there after. the flat hood is very light(less than 5#), and the turbo II hood will probably work out to about 12# with the rubber intercooler gasket. my turbo II hood also has a 2" taller scoop to try and gain some extra air into the intercooler. the stock turbo II hood(aluminum) weighs about 30# and is alot lighter than even a cut out steel hood(60+#). these are not made of carbon fiber to save weight. as someone posted before to add all the latch and hood hinge bracket and make the weave pattern on the top coat adds alot of weight and would only be marginally lighter than an aluminum hood. If you are interested in a flat or turbo II hood made to be as light as possible for a reasonable price, shooting for $400 for turbo II and $325-$350 for flat), please email me tim@wanaboo.com. the molds are already made and all that is needed is paid orders and the hoods will be ready. if someone wants a modified scoop added to a flat hood this could be done but someone has to pay for the prototype and mold. turbo II hood prototype(mold was done for free thankfully) cost me $450 to give you an idea.

 

A fiberglass N/A hood from Japco only runs $160. Why is the one you have $375?

I have the 1st gen hood from Japco. Cost me $130 plus $40 to fly it in to Atlanta. Strong and VERY light.

do you have the hood from Japco? I don't think it will fit a stock second gen without major modifications. their body kit is for a GT2 car which is built with a tube chassis. it looks similair but it is not dimensionally a duplicate of the stock parts. Also the price is set mainly by demand. molds are expensive to make and if only a handful of parts are built then the costs have to be spread to fewer customers. If you built 100 or 1000 then the price could be lowered substantially. this is why some of the Honda parts are so cheep compared to the RX7 parts.

 

I have the 1st gen hood, not the 2nd gen hood. It is identical to the factory if looking a the top, but it is not a bolt on hood. You have to use hoodpins.

I know he is not planning to do a TII hood, just a N/A. Maybe if there were enough people he would make one, but I kind of doubt it. He does it for just SCCA racecars.

BTW - I have the whole wide body kit. On the first gen it is not made for a tube body, it's a regular body part replacement. None of the parts are just bolt on however. All require fabrication.

If people have a front mount intercooler, the scoop serves no purpose other than getting the engine wet and dusty....

If I ever get a FC I want a DRY C/F hood. It's lighter and stronger than regular C/F but looks like crap. Paint is necessary

 

well id like a cf hood, but id probably chop some vents in it
and if its cheap $500 as someone said before, i guess id take it, compared to the $1000 ones like Knights sports and what not

rx-7addict, get your facts straight. not all eighty-nine plus have aluminum hoods already. i'm more than interested in getting a cf hood w/o a scoop for my na, because my steel hood is very heavy. fcstore.com by dave gibson already has them though. you'd have to have competitive prices.
