ACK! On series 4 (87-88) turbos w/ free flow intake and exhaust it doesn't affect MAX boost if the wastegate is full open 100% of the time- its being over-run; its flow is inadequate to keep "natural boost" down and has nothing to do w/ when it opens.
To bring boost down you must increase exhaust backpressure, restrict intake or (the one that doesn't hurt performance) increase the flow capabilities of the wastegate.
I certainly noticed ALOT more high rpm flow w/ 3" TID mod VS stock TID- this caused wastegate over-run even w/ my very ported S.4 wastegate.

No, its just your friend's Talon has a crappy turbo
I think the series 4 turbo is bad since it has the small wastegate-you can either blame that for boost creep on S.4 FC or the fact that our rotaries produce so much exhaust energy, but lots of exhaust energy is very usefull on the right turbo- small wastegate isn't. My view...

I did the 3" TID mod and have the RB midpipe, downpipe, and the Apexi N1 duals on my 87 T2. I only produced 6 psi of boost with this setup. I had to go to a ball and spring boost controler to up my boost to 11psi. It will hold 11 rock steady no matter what the weather. My wastegate is still stock, never been ported. I think my situation is rare however. I will be upgrading to a hybrid in the near future and will definately port the wastegate at that time.

Hmmm, is your turbo in bad shape? Mine would creep terribly at high rpm in 5th- like 150mph-ish.

you probably only have the 2.5" dp/midpipe one if you bolted it to a N1... but you should still have more then 6... your turbo is probably shot.

people are actually hitting 9-11psi with only an exhaust ? I have already dropped in a K&N DoubleCone, but my boost pattern is still quite low: something like 30-30-40 x10mmHg (which translates to 6-6-8), and it drops really fast

Maybe a DP and catback will help me....

(geez, how pathetic AM I ? I've talking about getting a DP and catback since Day 1 )

I have to let out of it to stay under 12 psi. My wastegate is ported about as big as it gets too.

I think this summer I'm going to add a 3" cat which I'm hoping will lower it a few psi. Then I can add a bigger TID and cone filter and still only creep to 10. (hopefully) I figure I'd have more power and better spool with a cat, k&N, and tid then with no cat and stock intake. but the boost creep would be about the same. plus with the cat I'd be legal

we'll see what happens, the best way would be to take the turbo off and port it though... but that takes more work
Thanks! That's exactly what I needed to hear

Your right 2.5"dp/mp. But the turbo seems fine there is no play axial or otherwise in the shaft, it burns no oil what so ever, and produces 11psi quickly and properly with the boost controler. I wasnt able to figure it out either, it puzzled me for awhile, but there doesnt seem to be a problem that I can see. It's all a mute point however i am going to a T04 hybrid this spring.

Mine will creep to 12psi in the higher gears with K&N filter, stock TID, ported engine, a downpipe, the bonez hi-flow cat and an apexi N1. It will even do 12 with the restrictor thing jammed in the exhaust, though you lose some top end and it sounds real shitty when you get to 6000rpm+

I wonder if they ported the wastegate when they rebuilt it (previous owner) It's a S5 motor btw
