will someone help me with this thing

hey guys, once again im posting because no one is helping so i figure maybe someone will help this time aroud.

ive got the summit rpm switch, it will not even turn on my electric ap when i rev to 7k, im not sure if its fried or what the deal is.

one thing i do need to know is, what does that red light mean next to the green one?
where do the gray an yellow wire hook up to?
how do you adjust that little adjustment thing called a pot.

I'm not trying to put you down or make you sound stupid, but did the switch come with any kind of instructions? I've never used one, but I'd think Summit would be able to explain where everything is supposed to go.

Okay, the red light means that you are getting a 12v power source. The yellow wire will hook up to the negative side of (lets say in this case) a solenoid that is currently OFF. When the disired RPM is reached the circut is complete and the solenoid will turn on.

The grey wire will connect to the negative side of a "solenoid" that is already ON. When the desired RPM is reached the the grey wire cuts to 6v and turns off that solenoid.

So obviously you don't need to hook up both to the same device.

Next to set the RPM you have to make all the little switches to the ON position and then start to turn off the switches to reach the desired RPM. I know it sounds really confusing, but its really not. Have a friend help you with this part.

after reading the last little part I think confused you. To set the RPM this is what you do:
1) flip all the little switches to the ON position - which is marked on the red switch board
2) lets say you want to set the RPM to 5000. Begin by reving to slowly and fliping down the 000's switches one by one. once you get to 4000 on the switch board then start in the 00's with 200 then 400 then 600 all those add up to 1200 then add the 4000 from the thousands and that adds up to 5200 rpm whitch is about as close as you are going to get.

just make sure that the switch before each one you put down is in the off position i.e. series circut

edit once you reach the desired RPM the green light will come on.

im using an electric pump, so your saying that i hook up the gray or yellow wire to the negitive tap of it?

this is really confusing, i think the best thing to do is draw a pic or take a pic of your set up.

but first let me tell you how im setting up my ports to work.

im useing a 12v relay, electric airpump, an as we all know the summit switch. now the way i hooked it up, is i connected the yellow or gray(tryed both) to the tap on the relay that is stated as the on/off.

then batt. to incoming 12v, then the tap across from it was the air pump 12v wire, the bottom tap was ground.

on the summit swtich, i jus set it to 3k an left the others on off. NOW ive heard in order to get it below 5k you have to adjust that little turny yellow thing in the top left.

let me know what i have to do to get this thing working, what am i doing wrong.

now wozzem sent me this pic, i tryed to go by what he said i had to do but its still not working, tell me if i have to do something different than what he drew...

o ya one more thing, i have this rpm switch thing hooked up in the engine bay, is it best to have it inside so i can set it up? also, does this switch only turn on when under load? or can i rev the engine and it will work?

nope... I wrote something then reread the posts and changed my mind and figured I was wrong. I've never used the RPM switch so I won't say anything. might just make things worse like I almost did before removing it.

In Wozzums picture:
1. The Red wire would be the one going from the battery pos to the rpm switch.
2. The Black wire would be the one from the battery negative to the rpm switch.
3. The Grey wire would go to the positive side of the relay's coil.
4. The White wire should go to the bullet connector on the TRAIL coil assy.
5. Cap off the yellow wire.

I had some problems with this RPM activated switch. I found that if I put the *400* to ON and the *2000* to On, that I could make the green light come on at 3800 by adjusting the **POT** that is on the board. On my board it was yellow in color and in the upper right hand corner. It has a plastic screw in its middle. It turns only one full turn.

If I were you, I'd just connect the Red, White, and Black wires for now. You should get a Red light showing its powered up. Then start the engine. Set the switches as I described. Now rev the engine. Did the green light come on at some rpm. It should have. If it comes on too soon/too late for your taste, then slightly adjust the pot one way or the other until the green light comes on closer to the desired rpm

Use the Summoit RPM Switch to operate a relay. The relay should be the one that actually feeds the airpump/whatever your trying to operate.

I could be wrong about having to use the pot to get the proper rpms, but I remember another fellow who had the very same problem I did. The switches would not get us where we wanted to be. We had to set it to 2400 with the switches and then adjust the pot to get exactly 3800 rpm.

The Summit part number on mine is 830449 and it has a green and a white light instead of the red one you have.

That's just what I was going to say. I doubt the rpm switch is rated for the current the air pump draws, so definitely use a relay.

i am using a relay...

when you said connect the gray wire to the positive side of the relay, do you mean the tap that is on/off?

the only other power sides on the relay is 12v in an 12v out.

im going to try to do what you said about 2400, but where should i have the pot turned to? about half way? or all the way to the left or right? or should i just adjust it as i rev to hopefully get the green light?

is the trailing coil by the battery? or up by the firewall?
and what do you connect it to on the coil?

im pretty sure i know what im doing but i want to ask these dumb questions just to make sure.

ten dollars says rx7raca doesn't make it to major in electrical engineering at MIT. On the other hand if this pisses him off, i hope its enough to get him to actually consider going.

The best information I can give here, without searching back through my old posts about relays is this.

A relay can be "activated, switched, changed, tripped, ect, ect ect..." by either a negative OR posetive current. Meaning your output from yout RPM switch (if I read correctly is negative?" would be used to make a negative relay switch. (whereas most use relays in a posetive relay switch, or just "relay switch" or "relay")

If you're curious about the correct posts on the relays to use, goto wallyworld, autozone, napa, ect and search through their relays. Look on the back of every package until you find the one that has numbers marked. More than likely it will be used in a posetive relay switch diagram, but reverse the incoming, ground, and posetive with their opposite.

BTW you'll have to do this too if you ever want to rewire your stock foglights, or your stock eletric antenna mask, they are both negative relays. As are probably alot of other things in these cars.

Here is a bottom view of one of the #2 relays.
The terninals are:
85. To ground.
86. Signal from switch.
30. Power from battery or alternator.
87 & 87b Power out to lights.

All the relays have the same terminal layout, #1 has the 87a terminal instead of 87b,
#3 is the same as #2
#4 has no 87b, both output terminals are 87.
