Will packed mufflers (magnaflow, dynomax, etc) live behind stock NA?
I have read about cars with headers burning up fiberglass packed mufflers (magnaflow, dynomax, the classic cherrybombs, etc.) due to flaming through them. I am going to patch up the stock exhaust on my 97 NA car by making my own catless downpipe and keeping only one AIR tube cat in a 2.25" pipe. Was wondering if I could use two round case magnaflow or dynomax mufflers in the stock location, and if they will live behind the otherwise stock NA motor? I am pretty sure this thing is not shooting flames! This car will probably only see about 1,000 miles a year so it's not like I need a guarantee the mufflers are gonna last 20k miles or anything like that.
Thanks

anybody? I ended up buying a new Eastern Converters downpipe that replaces the stock 3 cat pipe with 2 new revised cats (one pre cat, one AIR tube main cat). I would still like to run a pair of round case Dynomax or Magnaflow mufflers if they will live behind this engine (pretty sure I will not be throwing flames with a stock FC with 2 cats)
Thanks

I used two dynomax ultra flo ss mufflers for a year and it sounded the same as it did when I first installed it, and I was shooting out fireballs. So i am pretty sure the fiberglass in them is still in there.

cool, can you tell me what part # mufflers you used? I have used the ultraflo mufflers on american cars in oval case applications, I'd be interested in using an appropriately-configured set of ultraflo's on this car too.

For rear mufflers, a quality glass packed muffler should not be a problem. The cheap ones will have issues, and if you use them higher up in the exhaust stream, they will burn out.
My rear mufflers are glass packed and have been on the car for 10 years, from the time it was a 146HP NA with stock cats, to no cats, to a turbo-NA with the HT-18, to now with a GT4088R and 500 RWHP. They are still in great shape but keep in mind they were not the typical ricer mufflers for $65 at AutoZone.
For resonators, you MUST use stainless packed if you intend them to last.
