Why is my hood in my house?...

...Because I blew up my engine yesterday!

Oh well, it's an opportunity to take care of those many nagging problems that I have. The car will be better because of this screwup.

I'll talk to you folks in a month or two.

Send money!

Mike

It happened because if you run near the edge and one small thing changes, you're screwed.

Little Donny, RP's engine didn't last as long as this one. It's not the builder, it's me. I learn with every failure. I'll be back and more powerful and more reliable than before.

Mykl, thanks man. I'll do better this time.

Just curious - were you running 3mm metal apex seals?

I'm assuming the engine failure was due to detonation when the air/fuel mixture went sour under high boost?

Did your air/fuel, exhaust temp, etc.. gagues warn you in time?

vaughnc yep, 3mm two piece RP seals.

I was visiting the RX-7 club in New Orleans. They staged me against their quickest or near quickest (12.8) 3rd gen. We raced and I had to let off in each gear due to detonation. I thought I had let off enough but, obviously not. I saw only two or three lights on the knock sensor.

The only warning was the knock sensor lights. I really did try to let off enough to keep it from blowing.

Sorry to hear that Mike. Good luck on the new one. I do hear though that alot of people have been blowing the engine with the 3mm's. Could be concidental. Looking forward to hearing from ya when you come back. Take care mike

Ha! I won't do it this time. I really want to learn enough to not have to do this twice per year. I like telling the LS1 owners that they were just outrun by 1.3Ls. So..., I'm still with you folks, for now.

Thanks Sully, I think the 3mm thing is a result of feeling invincible. I know that's the truth in my case.

I will be back. Give me two months.

RXTASY1 yes, the park was nice. I just wish I had been able to stay longer and not have embarrased myself by blowing up my engine.

Those were some nice cars. More importantly, the owners were nice. There were as many or more of them behind me as well as two other second gens.

I did beat the guy. Even with me letting off in first and second and blowing it in 3rd, I still beat him by a wide margin. I don't know their reactions but, I wasn't the only one with a video camera. We might see a video of the race, with my smoke from my blown engine.

ZachSpazz, yea, it sucks. I learn though, from every mistake. I'll post here as I do this rebuild.

Thanks for the response!

MikeL,

This all goes back to daily driver vs. weekend dragster.

We all wish we could have both, but either it only gets 2MPG so you can't drive it anywhere, it gets fairly good mileage but you have to crank the boost to 20PSI to get 500HP, etc...

OK - somone answer me this - does NONE of the engine management systems let you control fuel economy with X-large fuel injectors? The idea is to be able to dialup HP through increasing fuel & boost equally or dial down for improved fuel economy.

Thanks

vaughnc, the Haltech allows for control on max boost and all other situations. It also allows for closed loop control to try to have good gas mileage at cruise. It can do both, invisibly.

My problem is, and has been, wanting the max power from 93 pump gas. I tune it to the limit. If anything changes, I have to let off the accelerator to keep the ping down. I didn't correct enough for the situation on Sunday. I'll be more carefull next time.

The Haltech ECU sounds good. I also want to wire in a butterfly flip valve in the exaust for better streetability with a mild street port. Hope the haltech has some customization options

Suggestion though - LOTS of octane booster and wet NOS when pushing the max.

damm was it really hot outside?

well Im not to sure what causes detonation
to much heat coming into the intake
or running too lean under full boost
would running a fan on the intercooler help out?
or maybe running a extra injector at a set PSI say 18lbs

Thats y im not pushing my new engine till I can get a back up motor

kabooski, it was real hot. It's just plain my fault. Too much boost for the fuel I had and, a hose had cracked on the boost controller. I guess that was just enough to let the boost go up a little. I'll be more carful with the next engine.

Nice car....sleeper

its pretty funny in one of your videos, how your're saying the car's a piece of **** and cursing, lol. I laughed so hard.

BTW, the 1/4 mile runs you did were they on slicks or the same tires you got on right now?

Thanks! Yea, I like the sleeper thing.

I was cursing at it because I had that charging problem. It doesn't really upset me when the car breaks, as long as I know what the problem is. I hadn't yet figured out the charging problem at that time.

All drag times were with NITTO drag radials with 28 psi. Those are my only tires for street and track. I've even autocrossed with them. I know now that I should run them at more like 18 psi at the drag strip. Had I done that, I might have actually run an 11.999 instead of 12.2-12.3.

Hey, tell your neighbor to shoot me an email!

My dad's TII? How do you know that?! You're right, I don't own the TII that I call mine. Although I have a bill of sale here as to protect my father in case I get in an accident and get sued, we leave the car in his name for other reasons. You're scaring me! How do you know this?!!!

I am illegally operating the cannons.

Mike
