Whoo Hwoo! Got Japanese FTP lenses today.

I'm sorry about the poor photos. I had to use the camera inside because of rain. I'll get better photos outside before and after the installation, after the rain delay.

Has anyone ever installed these? Does the wiring for them exist on a US series 4, series 5? When should they be on as wired from the factory?

Hey 4cefed7, don't you have these on your series 5? What did you do, wire them to be on with parking lights and park/head lights? Or, did you wire them to be on with the key? Or, did you wire them to be on with your factory fog lights?

I think I'm gonna wire them to be on with the parking lights and park/head lights. I don't want them on all of the time.

You realise that with a $5 wiring modification you could have lit the headlights in retracted position and saved the other $155 for something else .

Yes, I do but, these lenses look different than the US market lenses and, I worry about light leaking out of the car somewhere in the front and therefore showing that I have my headlights on while down.

Well, here in the US...they do nothing, lol. I have yet to find a good use for them....
They mount in front of the headlights....but like AaronCake was saying..you can just wire your lights to turn on while driving to shine through the FTP lense. Saves spending the $100+ for J-spec lenses that serve the same purpose.

There purpose is to flash slow people in the fast lane to let them know to ge the hell over.

Over here in the U.S. most people try to show you and slow down and wont let you around..or shoot you the bird or try to race you(in the bad way not cool way)...well the race thing is rare....they also like to yell at you to or worse case scenerio is to get shot..i see a lot of this cause i do a lot of driving for the company i work for

I have them too. i think they are sweet looking. i bought a wiring kit for fog lights and hooked them up. its cool to have your lights up and still have the ftp lights glowing

yeah and then you have 10amps (60w x 2) drawing off your aternater/battery all the time. thats good... also this way they are still on when the lights are on.

You are supposed to wire them so that they turn on when you pull the turn indicator when your lights are in the retracted position. With the standard FTP lenses the headlights shine through them when you pull back the turn indicator. This is so you can flash someone to let them know you want to pass (hence: Flash To Pass). So what you want to do with the J-spec lenses is to hook them up so that they shine when the lights are in the retracted position and you pull on the turn indicator. I believe that it is the hi-beams that you want to hook them up to. This would also make it so that they would turn on when the headlights are up and you turn on your hi-beams.

not for nothing but it sounds kinda stupid.....because if you want to ftp all you need to do even if the headlites are down is pull on the turn signal and the high beams will flash thru .....no need to but the 155.00 junk!

Well, I guess that's the difference between people, like me, who like to do the job correctly versus a cheap hack job.

I have yet to learn exactly how the lights acted as wired form the factory as intended for the Japanese market. I will find out and, I will wire them as they should be.

wrong, Wrong, WRONG! those are NOT flash to pass.... they are driving lights that turn on whenever the parking lights are on. If you go to the mazda website and download the FC windows backgrounds you will see this pic.

why does everyone always gang up on people for doing something out of the ordinary. i HAVE actually driven my car with just the FTP lenses by pulling the fuse.... and the light that actually got throught SUCKED MY *****. and i have a h4 conversion with hiper white bulbs. i think it is a really good idea, plus how cool would a car look to have both of those on at the same time.. and if you throw in the stock fog lites that would be even cooler.

if you just wanna run them as daytime running lites for safety id sure as hell rather have little bulbs running instead of my headlites.

The Japanese FTP with the lights look really nice at night with the headlights up. I think someone should really make a combo light in place of the FTP light like the '99 FD. Hmm...I think I could make one but I'm not too familiar with wiring...

Can't a switch be run through the retractor fuse, connecting and disconnecting the fuse?? That way you could even raise the headlights partially and flip the fuse, that may give it s nice unique touch. Please correct me if i am wrong.

Pulling the retractor fuse is a cheap hack, and it kills the functionality of the headlight. My wiring modification allows the headlights to work as normal.

i have blue strobe lights in my ftp lenses..looks cool at night and i had to do something with the lenses... also cant u just drill a old in your ftp and put some lights in there like i did my strobes, but normal lights that would look the same as j-spec and probably cost 5$

Thats exactly what I was thinking. Not for strobes but regular lights. It beats paying what Corksport is asking for J-Spec FTP lenses. Is the outer lense made of a different material? Regular FTP lenses quiturn to **** rather ckly and I'd hate to pay 150 bux only to have it look like the regular ones do.

I respect your descision to go with the JDM FTP lenses. In Japan, many cars have "city lights". City lights act like parking lights in the US. In Japan, or more specifically in the city, often times at night time, the headlights of a car were so bright, it would blind some of the other drivers. Alot of the Japanese cars incorporated these "city lights" so that the cars had a glow from the headlights so that you would know that there was a car behind you and was in motion. In the city, there was enough lighting so you didn't need to use your headlights. City lights are used out of courtesy to other drivers. But don't try doing that over here or you're liable to get a fat ticket for not having your lights on.

best was a 15.6@87, which was early in the day when it was about 96 degrees. I'm goin back after i get my full RB exhaust on, hopefully i can get way down in the 14's.
