Saw this on ebay, looks interesting.

You could use this to have a full exhaust on one side, and straight through on the other. I'm certainly not going to do this.

The Cause of Death
A Buddy of mine had something similar to that on his STi. Called a dump tube, I think. Basically hit a switch and it opens before the cats, close it and the exhaust goes through the cats and the rest of the exhaust system. It sounded like a Harley when he opened it up, lol.

I don't really get why some of you guys are bashing on this idea. Imagine living a state where there are emission laws, like NY, and you need to get it inspected once a year. If you install one of these before the cats on your vehicle, say an RX-7 where the cats are one of the most hindering performance aspects of your exhaust system (aside from the stock manifold on an NA), you can choose when you want those extra 10-15 horses. You can drive around like this, it would definitely be loud, but you'd have that extra power...then when it came time for inspection, close it up and let the sniffer go to work.
Seems a lot cheaper than buying a thousand dollar RB system. Performance at the flick of a switch, no?

ive never had smog station jack up my car to inspect the exhaust. besides, this doesnt make it an open exhaust, it just restricts the normal flow of your exhaust. just like a silencer if you have straight pipes. its a great ****** idea IMO

passing an emissions test isn't MERELY fooling a sniffer...
ALL of the original emissions components of the vehicle must be in place or have satisfactory replacements - ie. a new style cat can pass for the numerous precats installed on our cars from the factory..........but I assure you that one of these combined with whatever extra piping is involved are certainly NOT emissions compliant....
I do see your point but its simply a matter of if you live in a state or province with emissions laws, you've gotta take it like a man and make you car pass.....I mean its quite arugable that one could build a 400hp RX-7 and have an airpump of some description...cats....EGR all that good 'ol emissions garbage. Just because you can't gut the cats on your N/A and run around with "high performance" car anymore doesn't mean you need to go to all this extra work of FOOLING the emissions law.......I say embrace them if not OUT DO them and prove to everyone else that you can have a fast and emissions compliant rotary.

A friend of mine had a cable operated one of these on his 68 GTO in high school. It was fun. I see 2 problems with this one. It's overpriced and will kill the exhaust tuning on an NA.
I lived in Auroura for a while and my 87, with 80k miles on it passed the metro emissions test with no problems, stock. They never looked under the car. It won't pass now, however.

I had one on my TII. I built it into a custom 2.5 inch dp. The dump, would exit at the angle the dp was at, right before "turning" up towards the rear of the car.
1. Alot of time went into actually setting the cable to activate the valve.
2. The vavle never sealed right, so when the car was switched to "normal" you could still hear the major leak.
3. It was kind of cool to not wake anyone up at night, but the activation became annoying.
Just my .02

Most of you guys don't seem to realise that this is designed to be installed inline with the exhaust system, not on a branch. The ad clearly says it does not fully close so if you put it on a branch you'd have a permanent, loud exhaust leak.
You can get more sophisticated versions of this that automatically control valve opening based on engine load.

What was shown in that ebay ad was complete and utterly useless. Its not bypassing anything just changing the sound. A real exhaust bypass would switch completely open, essentially opening your exhaust immediately after the headers/downpipe.

why not simply put the stock exhaust back on for the test? it only takes about 30 mins and I'm sure you can find a stock exhaust for cheap. hell i got a stock TII exhaust for FREE!! then after the test just put the aftermarket one back on.

Here is something with a bit more function. http://www.atpturbo.com/root/releases/release091004.htm
Its activated by boost pressure. The info provided mentions using a boost controller to open or close off the pressure line to its actuator. This would prevent it from working on the street, but then you could let it work on the track.
Price= $235 without shipping

You've completely misinterpreted the product. The ad does not even use the word bypass. Changing the sound of the exhaust (i.e. making it quieter) is the whole point of it.
