Question Who Can Figure This One Out (Strange Noise, Read Description)

Ok, here is the problem that I can not locate. There is a loud clicking noise when starting out in first and then second gear. It sounds like a person taking a wrench and tapping on the underside of my car. It never fails and happens on every "launch" or even a slow take-off. It is really bugging me now. I lifted the rear and removed both wheels, and could not find the problem. No loose suspension parts in the rear. Could it be comming from the tranny or the front end? My hope is that someone has had this problem before. So far it has not effected the cars performance, but it is very annoying. It counds like a click........click.click! They are always successive. I tried to see on a hill if it would make the noise with the cluch disengaged (pushed in), and I think it was clicking then too. Basically I started my launch in 1st and then quickly puched the cluch in and let the car roll, sure enough the clicks continued. Sorry if this is a weak description, but it is the best I can do to describe a noise. Any and all help is appreciated.

Check the tire to make sure you don't have a nail or screw in the tread.

Then I would be checking wheel bearings.

thanks for the replys.

crasher2,
I have the nut on the rear shocks tightened all the way. Matter of fact I had them out a few weeks ago and they not loose at all.

Icemark,
nothing in the tires, the noise is too loud for that anyway. The clicking is like a metal wrench hitting a pipe (I can hear it with the windows up, over the sound of the engine)

As far as the wheel bearings, I checked the rear by manually turning them when the car was lifted. I even put the car in gear and turned the wheels by hand (turning the engine over). Seemed to turn nice and smoothly without any noise or tension.

Please keep suggestions comming

bingoboy, thanks for the idea. Yes, it sounds like it is comming from under the car in the middle or rear. You know how when you drive in a tunnel or close to a wall, the sound is reflected. Well, it sounds echoed from the rear when I do that.

yes, heat sheilds are fine. I think it is something mechanical. There is no rust on the car and nothing seems loose. It only happens in1,2 gears and on launch. Any ideas (mechanical) besides loose parts?

We had a noise in our 2nd Generation 7 in the rear end and it took a bit to find the problem...Turned out the front of the differential housing that fastens to the bracket on the cross member (left side) had slipped out and was stuck on top of the bracket. This caused the differential to sit at a slightly higher angle and was bumping against the under side of the tunnel at every shift..... sounded more like a thunk than a click so I am not sure just a thought.
Tim.

I just got the thumping yesterday! After a year of tuning, modding, restoring, repairing and replacing! I finally get the new exhaust on and get rid of all the hesitations to crack my frontdiff mount! I must keep telling myself it will be worth it when I put the car on the road!

I'm tracking a similar sound. When I rock the car in gear in the garage, the sound comes from the area of the front universal joint. I'll pull the driveshaft this weekend and examine the U-joint closely. There should be NO play at all or it's shot.

"tic tic tic tic" - Goes up with engine RPM under load?

My guess - a chipped tooth in the transmission input gear.

I have an NA tranny with that problem on the floor in my garage. (but the syncros are good)

as i see it.. seems that its somthing with the tranny or its drive train.. i have the same problem also.. when on launch it clicks more than it peels.. it clicks hard on throttle in first and second.. i haven't looked much in mine yet as of now. but i will during the summerl time.. so i would have some real time on my hand. but til then keep me updated on this problem of yours.. its somthing with the tranny and its drive train im sure!.. well almost sure.that is. ehehe..

Sure Shot, that is what I was going to say...had one of them chipped teeth in a 1963 Impala SS one time and it sounded just like that...also it could be the shielding around the rear of the transmission about where the shaft goes into the tranny, mine got bent one time and did that but I think that was an 84 rx....
