what do you mean by this? The throwout bearing CAN make an awful noise like a whirling when it is failing or getting old etc.? It happens more often when it is cold as well and tends to go away or become silent when things warm up
splain lucy? why do you say no it can't?

I'm going to have to agree with the clutch fan notion simply because of how he's described it. my crown vic makes the same noise when it's cold. Judging by his post count he is probably a new rx7 owner, possibly never driven a rwd car or one with a clutch fan on it, so I can see why he'd be asking himself wtf is that.

its a viscous fluid clutch strapped to the fan, i know- i had to replace a broken one on mine.
when the fluid heats up (controlled by heat generated by radiator while driving) it thickens, causing it to drag the 'fan blades' inside the clutch- spinning the fan.
if your car is running at the perfect temperature you can put your hand right in there and stop that fan without worries of broken digits
every rx7 does that on a colder start. that fluid is just cold and thick, its only thinned out at its optimal temperatures.
if someone can explain this better than me than have at it, theres some areas that i think could be explained better but.. i only know so much english

frankly, his description was a general one to begin with and I never said fan clutch was not it just offered another possibility and it can (the release bearing) make noise long before it fails even from poor lubrication of release bearing sleeve as evidenced in several rx-7s I have owned and seen, and noise description in troubleshooting guide. especially when they start to get old, and yes the noise can go away as it warms up.
It does not have to be the fan just because you say so, regardless lets hope he can figure it out and please post the findings for future consideration.
