When do RX7 FC start dying?
Yo! hey all new around these area's.
I'm currently selling my Nissan 240sx to get my friends FC with 16x,xxx,xxx and im just wonder when do the rotary's start dying?
im a low budget poor bastard.
the FC seems to drive great, idle's fine and ... it still pretty quick for a 91, but iunno seen some posts about sudden deaths where the engine just doesnt start =((
if anyone is interested in a project car my 240sx S13 coupe is forsale on www.Zilvia.net

J-Rat - I'm assuming he means N/A, the poor bastard comment sorta implies it Hence why I have a N/A. Well, that and it was 200 dollars...
If it's a N/A (Naturally aspirated), then they'll run for quite a while.. My 86 GXL had 217,500 when I tore down the engine for a rebuild.. It was still well within spec and really didn't need the rebuild anyway (200 dollar car, I had no idea what the history of it was). Essentially, if you keep the maintinence up, make sure it's full of oil and never overheats, a N/A will run for quite a while.
although, you're going to have to expect at least routine maintience, remember, it's still 13 years old!
good luck!

Um when you let go a apex seal, corner seal, water O ring, Oil control ring, crack a housing.....etc
In reality just when it breaks.
yes you're question was this vague!

My 89 GXL (N/A) got to 217,000 before I lost an oil seal in the motor so yes you can push them up there. The little red head pretty much has the original everything (to my knowledge the Alt and Stereo are the only things not original) but is still fun to drive.
BTW the motor still starts and runs well, it's just the James Bond smoke screen that trails behind me that keeps be from driving her.

Yeah, mine was still going strong at 217, but it can't tough 160 million (way to point out the typo, Steven ) .
I guess it's probably a good thing I tore it down then, it seems like something stupid like an oil seal or water jacket oring goes around 220 or something.. I didn't know it when I tore it apart, though, and you couldn't tell, my engine was very pretty on the inside..

201,700 on my stock TII, original motor. Only runs because it loves me. It's essentially held together by sheer luck.
I have both a 240sx and my FC.... For reliability purposes I'd say keep the 240.

Wow, over 200k on a turbo That's cool! I thought only us N/A guys had the luxury of reliablity
FastRotaries - DAMN! I would have kept going with mine (without rebuild), if I knew the condition of the car.
Tk1999 - You're going to have to give us some more details than that for the price. Body condition, leaking fluids, smoking, etc? Remember: Mechanical is comparitivly cheap, body is expensive if you're worried about looks.

id say it depends on the prior owners.. if you can do a car history check.. if the cars been passing smog without problems, then the cars usually in good condition.
mine has about 150k on it and it runs strong.. its faster than my old civic si.

There are 2 tells when evaluating a rotary.
1) It has oil injection so a tiny amount of smoke is normal.
Anything more is a problem.
2) As a rotary wears out it looses compression, so a compression test is a good indication.
All other mileage issues are the same as any other car.

very good stuff though ^
don't go buy an FC without reading that first...
as for $1400, sounds reasonable. no way to tell seeing how you didn't really tell us much...assuming the engine is fine, if the interior and paint is good, and there is no rust i would expect to pay a little more than that...if not, maybe a little less...
