When to check coolant level?

My coolant level scared me the other day when I noticed it being about half way in between the full and low mark; as I always keep it on the full mark. So I decided to go get some coolant and top it off. But to my surprise I came back and it was on the full mark again. The first time I checked it was after a lil drive. So question is:

When should the overflow tank read full?

- when the car is cold
- when the car is warm

Always check this with a cold engine. It should be between low and full. When the engine is hot is does not mather where the level is as long as it is not overflowing. Important is that the coolant get sucked in the engine agian when cooiling down.

When it's running the level is exactly on the full line and when it cools down it sucks some in and goes down to about half way in between the low and full mark. I think I wrote it wrong the first time. Seems like my system is working properally then; just a lil low on coolant.

Sounds like your right where you should be to me. Like Marco said, make sure it's between the low and full when it's cold. Oh and if the little "add coolant" light illuminates and your treated to a wonderful sound...you may want to add some more coolant...
