Whats that silver thing!?!

Hey, I have an 88 gxl n/a. I either want to build my own cold air intake, or buy one ready made for my car. The only problem is, there is an air pump and some really weird silver (metal) box under the filter box. There are a few hoses and sensors it looks like that are connected to it. What is that, and can i bypass it when adding a cold air intake. Thanks.

It's your AFM and you can bypass it buy converting to a full standalone.

I want the filter to sit in the same general area. Maybe create a box to block heat waves from motor. And turbo 2 rotor, i know this is lame, but could you please go into more detail. thnx

The AFM (air flow meter) measures the amount of air going into the motor and tells the ECU how much fuel to add based on that. i.e.: you need it. Standalone engine management systems utilize other ways to measure airflow and don't use the AFM.

Well a standalone engine management system will cost upwards of $1000, but you can't base your decision of buying one solely on eliminating the AFM. A standalone EMS allows you to adjust all aspects of your car's fuel and ignition system, to tune your car to run with large turbos or other extensive modifications. It sounds like you mostly want to get rid of the AFM for cosmetic purposes, in which case I will say just deal with it. It is not a restriction at all and has an important job to do. You can get an adapter that allows you to put a cone filter on the end of it, it'll cost you $20 or less. In your case, I'd put a cone filter on the stock AFM, and buy some thin aluminum and bend it into a box to go around the filter.

Yeah, i saw that on the forum. What about the section from the Afm to the throttle body? Should i swap that out for something? or just leave it stock. Once again, it would look good if i had aluminum piping, but i can get over looks if my wallet comes into play

Corksport has a piping kit, kind of pricey though:

Wait a second. Are you referring to that Small four inch by two inch Silver Box like thing Under the Stock air Box?(once you remove the air box it is Right there and it attaches to the Bottom of the starting of the Passenger fender well). That is the Fuel injector Resistor Pack.
