what year is BEST?

I'm in the process of buying a second generation RX7 turbo II. What year is the best? I'm eyeing the 87s. I want to get a year/model where the engine will hold up.

Umm, 87's are good, They have a slightly different engine. The 87 has less horsepower. But the newer ones seem to have more "Fragile" engines. Which ever you buy will be fun

The electrics in the 87 and 88 cars are better, but the engines have less horsepower, and are of course older (unless swapped). The 89-91 are best as far as speed, but are usually more pricey. The BEST....A Series 4 (87-88) with a Series 5 (89-91) turbo engine.

87-88 TII Horse Power = 180hp stock
89+ = 202 stock
