What tranny/diff fluid?

In my 86' n/a 5spd..

I looked in the FAQ and I either skipped it or it is not in there.. I only say engine oil listed.

what is recomended and what is good to use for the manual trans and diff fluid?

driving for me is normally all spirited driving and Auto X I have 70K on the clock stock clutch as I know and no slipping or grinding.

I am going to do a fluid change tomorrow and want to do the diff and trans too.

also how much fluid will I need for the trans and diff?

thx guys I appreciate it alot!

If you feel like spending some money, get Redline synthetic. If you're on a budget, Royal Purple sythetic is pretty good. Don't waste money on non synthetic gear oil. If I remember correctly it takes 6 qts for the tranny and about 2 for the diff. I could be wrong, it may take 6qts for both, but I think it's the first one. Redline is expensive, but it definately does the trick.

I sell red-line and personally I dont like it it dont have the additives in it that keeps the gears and syncros well lubed for longevity

I thought the diff and trans used different fluid

I only have a n/t base so I take it no limited slip

I just started using NEO synthetic oil in my diff and tranny. I've used Redline MT-90 and Royal Purple Max Gear and so far the easiest to shift with in the cold weather is the NEO fluid. I don't have any reviews of it yet during racing, when it gets a little warmer out I will get a better idea of what the fluid is like and how the tranny is acting.

I just got it changed yesterday. I have an S5 NA GTUs tranny with a VLSD rearend.

2.5 quarts for the tranny before it started to overflow.
1 quart for the VLSD, before it started to overflow.

Any GL5 for synchronised transmissions. Additives for the rear end if you have LSD. and Bama420, non synthetic gear oil isnt a "waste" by any means. As long as you get something good and not the $2.50 a quart quakerstate junk. Even that will probably do the average car just fine. I used Castroil, at around $5 a quart. Trans took about 3quarts completely empty and the diff took about 1.5 for me

i use Redline MT90 in my tranny and Redline superlightweight Shockproof diff fluid with a little bit of friction modifier in my stock LSD.

Do you drive one of these?

I've never heard of that NEO oil either, and their website is less than informative beyond a glorified "we make good stuff". Still, often times it's the more humble that can out perform. Might be worth looking into.

The tranny takes about 2.5qt
and the diff about 1.5qt... these are ROUGH NUMBERS. I RECOMMEND YOU LOOK IN THE FAQ AND/OR THE FSM FOR THE PROPER AMOUNTS.

DO NOT USE LSD ADDITIVES IF YOU DO NOT HAVE A CLUTCH TYPE LSD!!!

I have a VLSD so I use the Redline 75W90NS fluid instead of 75W90. 75W90 has friction additives.

If you have a Torsen/Helical LSD (Read: Miata/FD/OBX swap), use 75W90NS as well.

Tranny: Redline MT-90
VLSD: Redline 75W90NS

That's what I use. Everything is nice and smooth now.
