Basically, you are looking at about $3,000 - $3,500 for that car. Also note that the engine is probably on its last legs with 132K mi, so you would soon be paying about $2K for a rebuild. However, just about any car in your price range will probably need a rebuild soon.

1) You guys tend to look for cars listed in the Auto Trader, where most cars list for way too much money. You should look in the local newspaper and check with your local RX-7 clubs.
2) Tucson is a college town filled with young, inexperienced car buyers who are willing to spend a lot of extra scholarship money on a used sports car because they don't know any better. Note that you can generally get a better deal on cars close to graduation, while you are going to get reamed on pricing at the beginning of semesters. The nearby military base with young "military intelligence" types may also be a factor.
If you really can't find anything in a month or two, then try looking for cars in the Phoenix area, which is only a couple of hours drive.
PS: I was born in Tucson, and I lived in Arizona for over 16 years, so I do know a little bit about the area. Shouldn't you guys be looking for a Ranchero or El Camino? Those are the vehicles to have if you want to be slick in AZ.

If the guy knew a hole lot about rx7s he would know that they are not worth $5k with 132k miles on it. but seeing how their are people on here that would pay that amount for one I just might sell mine for a RIDICULOUS PRICE ha ha.

I challenge someone to find one in the Bay Area, in good running shape, no dents, no rust, for under $5k. Sure there are some occasionally, but not worth buying.
And no, I don't want a zenki FC, once you get a kouki you don't want to deal with older ones.

Lets dismiss each statement out of hand...
1. I check Autotrader, www.bigdealclassifieds.com, local papers (Thriftly Nickel). etc...Dont assume I dont know how to buy or find cars. I can say with resonable certainty that I have been doing it almost as long as you have.
2. YES, there are FEW FCs around the college area, but they ARENT FOR SALE....And since I work on the AF base I can tell you FIRST HAND, that I am one of THREE people driving FCs on base..
And precisely WHAT did you mean by "military inteligence" types?
Its nice to know that you are familiar with the area, so if you are so good at locating FCs, here is my challenge:
FIND ONE IN TUCSON, S5 TII, RUNNING, GOOD SHAPE, UNDER $4000, IN 24 HOURS. Shoot, I will even concede defeat if you find one in Phoenix.

Hmm...
for an '89 with mods that might not be a bad deal.
If the engine has never been re-built...not such a good deal. You might be able to talk him down though.
I paid $5000 US for my '89 Turbo II, 180,000 miles on the car, rebuilt engine/turbo, new paint job, wheel wells replaced, tranny in perfect condition, no rust (except on the exhaust). Perfect condition minus small amounts of wear on the seats, almost all highway kilometers, never winter driven, it was still running the original exhaust, which I replaced due to corrosion. All of the car was still original or direct replacement parts. STOCK. (with minor porting on the intake ports during rebuild).

While not actually in Tucson, Ft. Hauchuca is close enough to affect the economy, especially when it comes to the demographic types which are most likely to buy a used FC. I wouldn't think that Davis-Mothan would be much of a factor in the used FC market.
LOL, if you are only spending 24hrs to look for cars, then you are probably not going to find a whole lot of good deals. Price a canned soft drink at 7-11 and compare it to the same thing at the supermarket. Price a package sent next-day air through Federal Express vs. the same thing sent 1st class through the USPS. Convenience costs money, and there is a difference between price and value. If convenience is worth the price to you, then that's fine, but just don't expect a lot of value for your dollar.
BTW, for those who like rare RX-7's, here is a 10AE for $2K.

Value is whatever buyer and seller agree on at any point in time
$5,000 could be worth it depending on condition. I don't think 2nd gens are rare enough to command collector prices but any good 10 year old car can be worth 5G. I define good as excellent paint/body/interior/mechanicals/electric. Anything that does not work is a bargaining chip.
In the northeast you are not going to find $100 rx7's. You generally get what you pay for, most people know what they have and so should a buyer.
As far as mileage goes, depends on how well car was maintained. Any engine or tranny can go, no warranties on 10 yr old cars. I live in NYC my daily drivers have low miles but get the crap beat out of them.
