Bingo. I can dive into the lengths of carbon atoms involved, but that's overkill.

Basically, unless your running any higher compression (that's it.) than stock in an NA platform (IE, your running some high compression rotors) there is NO benefit to gain from running ANYTHING higher than 87.

If you think that a NA is going to generate scenarios that would possibly cause detonation, then either the timing is WAAAAAY advanced or there are other things wrong (half the fuel being injected resulting in an extreme lean burn...but really...when would that happen?!!).

I advanced the timing a great amount on my '83s 12A. It still lasted to 185K, running 87, and a shutter valve that made baby jesus cry everytime I turned the car off (gunshot sounds).

No detonation there. Seal wear was what should be expected and nothing horrible happened (not to say you should go advancing the timing without knowing what is going on in the motor...hindsight =20/20).

interesting, extended streetport with basic bolt ons is safe then to run on 87? What about octane booster? should it be used too if the original owner was always running 91?

I'm going to reply to this with a quote from Felix's FAQ.

WIth the NA rotary, the highest octane you should use is US pump (AKI) 87, typically RON 91 outside the US, no matter how heavily your engine is modified. Octane in excess of any engine's actual requirement is always wasted. The issues of purity and additives in more expensive fuels are entirely separate issues. There's no reason not to want either in a NA rotary.

The only thing I run in my T2 is 93. At the strip with the boost turned up I run premixed 114. Havent had any problems with detonation and the motor has been running damn good.

Hummm, I have never ran anything less than 93 on my new engine, wonder if I should give it a try....and I do run "some crazy timing advance" on my SP N/A. I will bump it down some and put some 87 in her, and premix it as well. See if she sputters and ***** herself. Last time I ran 91 she barely would get with it. WTF.

yeah i have the stock turbo on mine (its a s5 j-spec) i will upgrade turbo eventually, but the stand alone has top priority right now. if the place has 93 then i put it in. otherwise its always 91 or higher.
