What exactly do I need?

Well, I got the 1990 GXL from Garfinkle a few weeks ago, now I'm tired of it just sitting in the driveway. The rear rotor is blown, so obviously it needs a rebuild. So what all do I really need to get her going? I have seen "overhaul" kits that just have apex seals, and a few other gaskets for around $155. Then I also see "rebuild" kits that are like $600-900. They have all kinds of parts in them. So, what should I get to get her on the road. Right now I just want her cruising again (well, on more than one rotor).

Thanks guys.

Miles?

1. In all cases - rebuild kit, gasket set, blood, sweat and maybe a few tears, spark plugs, oil, antifreeze and other expendables
2. Most cases - Apex Seals, Corner Seals, All springs,
3. Many cases - Side seals, Oil control rings, Oil Pump Chain, all bearings
4. With a blown rotor - rotor housing & rotor
5. Discretionary: Clutch Assy, Pilot bearing and seal, clean injectors and renew o-rings, lap side housings, water pump and t-stat (OEM only please), oil pump

Personally, I always plan on the first two plus a clutch, and inspect the balance. Anything marginal gets replaced. I generally, “brighten up” the injectors and replace the pilot bearing. I might have missed a few things but this is a general list.

Thanks Gadget. The clutch seems good. Most of the top half, from what I understand, is new or has been fixed. The owner before David took it to a shop that didn't know squat about rotaries. They replaced the ECU, injectors, gaskets and some other things. Also when I tear it down, I was thinking about removing some of the emissions stuff, but I'm a little sketchy on exactly what. Also, looking through the spark plug holes for the rear rotor, it looks to be fine, minus the apex seal.

So who do you suggest I get the parts from?

your best bet is probbaly a remain engine from a local dealership. as you will probbly need a new rotor and housing. which will add up to the cost of a whole engine in the end. this saves having to build one, and you get a warrenty.

Basic minimum for blown rotor motors:

gasket set with coolant seals
apex seals
oil o-rings (the metal carriers can be reused)
thermal pellet replacement
oil and filter
antifreeze
rotor and rotorhousing

IF you're good and organized, everything else can normally be reused.

Some would elect to go with front and rear main seals, corner and side seals and springs, apex springs, etc. but unless you damage them or lose them on disassembly there is usually not a good reason to.

Plan on having a tube of hylomar and a tube of sealant (I use ultra black), as well as plenty of gasket scrapers, razor blades, rotary wire brushes, etc. to do the cleanup with.
