He polishes a UIM for an FD but it's all the same, just takes alot of grinding and sanding

Die grinder with paper cartridge rolls...It's dirty, dirty, dirty and pain in the butt work. In my mind, totally not worth it.

Arrow

Use your dremel and their abrasive buffs, cleaned up my cosmo front cover in minutes. They get into grooves and contours very well.

use a soft, soft steel wire wheel or better, a brass wheel. It's going to smell pretty bad.

I use CLR to soak the gold plated parts and hardware. It strips off everything and leaves you with bare metal if you leave it in long. You can paint it then or use a high temp clear coat from VHT.
You can also try to dip the same parts and remove them prior to the CLR eating the plating. That way you can get a lot of the surface oxidation off before you get to bare metal.
