The only thing i do know is my car is a 1988 and when i run the vin# it says it a GXL. This has been getting to me for a few months now im gonna let you know the options it had.

1988 RX-7
5 lug wheel 15x6
power steering
power brakes
power sun roof
Aero package (3 peice foam bumper lip, foam air director peices in front of rear wheels, rear foam spoiler)
security system
radio was gone when i got the car but speakers have built in amps
steel hood (magnet sticks)
NO power windows
NO power locks
NO adj. suspension

You do NOT have a GXL.

S4 GTU's had a LSD in the rear, turbo brakes, the turbo front sway bar, and turbo seats.

 

thats what i thought but didn't all the GTU models come with aluminum hoods? and whats up with the vin saying it is a GXL? and i basicaly got the car from the original owner.

My GTU does not have an aluminum hood. Is your suspension stock?

 

just remember. these cars are 20 years old and more... how many changes have you made in the last year or two you owned it...

so how many changes could have been made in the last two decades? yeah... trust your VIN, that dosnt change.

 

GTU - according to the options.

S4 Verts came with Aluminum hoods. It's the only official S4 N/A Aluminum hood. Others may have come here or there, but GTU models usually have steel hoods.

What did you use to "run the vin"?
Call Mazda corporate and ask them.

GXL - The Auto Adjusting suspension is a dead giveaway.

S4s NEVER came with power locks.
S5s only came with a passenger side power lock.

 

Hmmm... odd... my 88 GXL came with power locks. Canadian car though...

 

My VIN comes up as a GXL, but it has single piston brakes, manual windows and locks, steel hood and no spoiler. Also has a depressingly open diff

 

It could also be a 5 lug swapped base.

Are you the original owner?

My 1986 GXL came with a mangled front bumper, a dented driver's fender and a rusted out passenger fender, but I'm pretty sure it didn't come from the factory or dealership like that.

The dealership sales brochures for the S4s make no mention what so ever on the power locks.

 

what diff does the 89 gxl come with?

 

I had a REAL 88 GTU. And I have a REAL 88 T2 now.

For the GTU: besides GTU badges on the side, you should have turbo seats and twill/tweed upholstery. The door panels look and feel like T2 door panels except they don't have power locks.

 

You're forgetting 1 important factor: Power Seatbelts. (For GXL's)

NO .. S4 Gxls DO NOT have power seat belt. s5's might. I have a gxl i have power windows power door locks power stearing factory alarm, AC that i pulled out. power sunroof and Electronic Shocks. ALL gxls have AAS Shocks. SO if you see wires going to the shock towers then you have a gxl..

well mazda said it is a 1988 GTU P built 10-28-1987 they couldn't tell me anything else and im not sure what the P is for.
