What to do...

I just got a 1986 rx7, I'm new to rotary engines but have learned the layout and basics of the engine by a co-worker at our shop that has had one for 4 years. The problem with the engine is there is a coolant seal busted I think because it's blowing out white smoke at high revs and trying to overheat.

I am thinking of what to do with the car. So far I'm am loving the rotary side of cars, they are allot more tuner friendly in my eyes because it's easy to get to everything and the better you take care of the engine is better it runs when some pistons will run good one day and take the next day off. (After working on hondas and nissans all day and mostly oil change a tune ups, I love where the oil filter is!).

I really don't know what to do about the engine, I just got down stripping the trans apart and it looks like it mite need a new one, I rewired the whole engine, and bought all fluids to replace and changed oil filter and oil.

Question is what should I do? rebuild/turbo, 20b, v8, etc ..... I have 4k bucks left after I get done fixing the rest of the problems with the car. I thinking more toward rebuild/turbo because if its just the seal the engine only has 83k miles on it and could just fix that and buy turbo and save to buy a p port block.

The money: You got 4k with no labor or tuning added (I work in a shop and it has a dyno, old but still works)

Remember: This is a fully stocked car right now, add price of mounts and axles and such.

Looking forward to seeing the ideas you guys come up with! Thanks in advance.

I'd buy a 13BT (turbo, lower compression) motor from a reputable j-spec dealer and rebuild it, then drop it in with a TII driveline.. That would be the first choice.. You could turbo the NA, and it has been done by numerous people on the forum, but you will have to be much more careful when tuning the car.

If money permits, i wouldn't re-use any seals in a motor for a rebuild, but can be done.

Or you could rebuild it as a good NA motor and port it..

I'd drop in a turbo motor personally.

The V8 conversion might cost more then 4K
The 13BT conversion is your easiest/cheapest bet.

How is that the best bang for the buck? I don't want to turn this into another v8 conversion argument, but the general consensus even by the people that have done the conversion over in the "Other Engine Conversions" forum is that it costs at least 8-10k, if not more. Put 8-10k into a 13bt and you're doing mighty fine, not only that but you still have proper weight distribution (this does depend on which v8 you use, though).

That's what I'm planning on doing with mine. J-Spec 13BT's run from around $800 to $1200 with a transmission. Rebuild it (just to make sure), and you should still make out better than you would with a factory rebuild.

Get a nice 3" full exhaust, upgraded fuel pump, and a fuel cut defender also, and you should still have some decent change left over, as well as 50+ extra HP.

Prices are from a few online J-Spec dealers. JDM-Online has a 13BT with Transmission for $850, J-Spec Auto Sports sells them for $1299 (they were cheaper a few months ago). I haven't heard any feedback on JDM-Online, but I've heard a few good testimonies for J-Spec Auto Sports. I've seen many others, but those are the two that stuck with me.

Despite what the seller might say, a J-Spec engine is still a used, basically "junkyard" engine, so I wouldn't pay too much for one personally, especially since a rebuild will probably be neccessary.

I have a little less than $4000 into my LT1 V8 conversion and the motor has already been dynoed at 340rwhp/340rwtq NA and 550/600 on the jug...

Just food for thought.

Built 1994 Long Block with 2k miles on it $2600
T56 Tranny that needed a B/H and 2nd gear $800
Grannys Kit $600
Headers $150

The stock NA diff and axels will be fine for most V8 guys unless you are wanting to run slicks and a pretty stout motor.
