what to do?

i have an 88 gxl. i've had for a while but just got started working on it. we took the exhaust off because of an exhaust leak. the pipe is cracked in half right after the catalidic converter. (will try to get pics of it if i can). would it be better to just buy a new exhaust or to fix this (we do have a welder). also, if anyone has any ideas of some good first mods to it, let me know.

-thx
eric

get an aftermarket exhaust. It's one of the best mods you can do to your car!

yes! go for the GReddy Power Extreme cat-back that the guy in the parts for sale section is selling for the 2gen. Also go for the RB header and high flow cat at mazdatrix. That will get you going in the right direction.

are you talking about the y-pipe? If money is an issue, you can try to weld it, or look for a used y-pipe, or whatever section you need on here. If you have some cash to spend, get a cat-back exhaust system. Either way, if you feel you can repair it, then do that. If you can afford to replace it with an aftermarket, or OEM system, then that will work. As far as basic beginner modifications.....an air intake, aftermarket header and exhaust. There are other things, check the FAQ, and search, this comes up a lot.

If you can afford to replace it, then do so. If not, then weld it.

definitly try to get a catback system, the stock catback is damn restrictive and has a very small diameter. i measured the stock ypipe on my 91 coupe, it was smaller than 2 inches, from what i could tell it was 1.75 inches and maybe expanded a bit when warm...so i had a custom catback made with 2.25 inch and the car ran better and had plenty more hp along with my other exhaust mods. dont go with stock unless preformance is not a concern.

well, this one was put on by the original owners (we are the 2nd) its not a stock, but its in rough condition. it was cracked right after the cadalidic converter. sunday, we took the exhaust off, which i might add was a fun project....., and got a better look at it. where the 2 pipes connect right after the cadalidic converter, it was mangled...destroyed, unusable. we cut off the 2 rusted pieces. we were fortunate to find a piece of pipe, (automotive, not some random piece), that was the same diameter. we are going to weld them together and make it the pipe 1 piece. also, the pipe diameter is 2 1/4 and it goes down to 2 1/8. wish i knew the make of the pipe, i recently got pics of the car and have them posted but i didnt get the exhaust cuz it was in the garage and it was getting dark (car is at dad's house). ill see if i can get a pic sometime later and see what you guys think of it.
