What is this?

Hey guys, I am gonna try to clean up my engine bay a little bit. I need to know what can be removed and still make the car run properly. I removed the A/c, I am taking off the Air pump, only thing I want to keep is power steering. Any vacuum lines I can removed? Also got a question abotu what this part below is, and can I take it off?

If you take the air pump off you will loose function of your aux ports and VDI (as well as kill your cat converter).

With the VDI and Aux ports not functioning you will have no power above 4500 RPM.

Removing the air pump will not gain you any HP, and in fact lower your top end power. This is not some silly Chevy where removing the old belt driven air pump gets you 10 HP.

The part you are pointing to in your miny picture is the evaporative Canister, It helps prevent the smell of gas, you can remove it, but unless you have a replacement you will have the oder of gas in the engine compartment.

OK, so, then why do most people take the air pump off then? And, if I block off the canister would it still produce the smell? would I smell it more than I do now inside my car?

Most people only take the air pump off on a S5 if they are cluless or are trying some funky aftermarket or GM electric air pump.

Most people do not remove the air pump on a S5 non turbo.

And if you smell gas now, with it still there, then you have other major issues and should not even drive the car until that is fixed first.

to continue Icemark's word of wisdom, if you smell gas you must act to ensure that your fuel pulsation damper/dampener is in good working order. If it's leaking fuel, you WILL have a fire under the hood any day. Do a search and find out what you can do about it NOW!!! This is a common problem with RX7's...
