Ok, all you 2nd gen experts.
Besides TII's:
By year - what models had Limited Slip rear differentials as standard equipment. I believe all '86-91 GXL's did.
Any body want to correct this thought and/or expand this definition?

All T2s had 4.1 LSd that can only be used with a T2 drivetrain, because the flange diameter is larger than a NA. All gxl's form 86-90 had lsd stock, 5sp had 4.1, autos 3.9. LSd's are usually identified by a tag hanging from the upper fluid fill bolt on the rear. Other cars with LSD were 86-7 sport(unmarked except for aero kit, AL hood, and no sunroof usually), 88 GTU, and 89-90 GTUs. All these had a 4.3 LSD rear, which is valuable and rare. In 91 there were pretty much no trim levels but T2 or coupe. Not sure what the couple would have, except that they usually had options of a gxl.

Thanks, bro. i knew someone would jump on this one.
Ok, to summarize:
'86-'90 GXL (Love it when I'm right), but avoid the automatics
'86-'87 Sports
'88 GTU
and '89-'90 GTUs (rare but prefered for the 4.3)
All you '88 Vert owners ------- grab your wrench's!! :-)
Ok, how lets try another trivia for who ever else trys this one.
What years had 18+ gallon gas tanks?? I think it was only 1989.

BTW, the 86-7 sport and 88 GTU had 4.3 lsd along with the 89-90 GTUs.
As far as the gas tank, the 89-91 cars all had them. Fuel pumps are longer(taller, whatever) also on these cars. A fuel pump from an 88 will bolt into an 89, but you can only use 2/3 of the tank. A fuel pump from an 89 will not bolt into an 88 at all. Just FYI. Any more 2nd gen trivia??
Cmon, this is getting fun!
Here's one: What do you have to do to run an 86 computer in an 88 car? (this is simple)
Another: what do you have to do to run 86 injectors in an 88 car?(not so simple)

are you sure the 87 sport had the LSD?
when I put my car on jacks and spun one tire the other one moved in the other direction LSD would make them both turn the same way right?
I am sure that I have the sport (aero package, TII suspension, 15" rims, 4 pot front brakes and vented rear brakes, and from what a understand was a option on the sport is the variable assist PS, though I do have a sunroof and a steel hood)
as for the gearing I could swear I have the 4.1 when doing 55 down the freeway in 5th I am pulling about 2100-22oo RPMs
any ideas to whats going on?

You guys are wrong on this one
The only cars to have LSD on FC other than T2s are
88 Conv
86-88 GXL
89-90 GTUs (they are the ONLY, i repeat ONLY car with 4.3 rear)
89-91 GXL DO NOT have LSD
86-87 SPORT DO NOT have LSD
89-91 conv have 4.1 rear, but NO LSD
The only ones I am unsure about is 88 GTU, I am 99% sure the LSD is not available on NA in 91, but that I can be wrong, but the ones I above I am sure

tmak,
How is it that I just sold a rear end from an 89 gxl, that had a tag on it that said LSD? Also when spun by hand both wheels turned the same way. Explain that?
Again, ALL GXLs 86-90(not one in 91, but most coupes too) had LSD. The 5speeds had a 4.1, and the automatics had 3.9, all LSD.
Ive even seen the oridingl dealer option sheet from the window of a new gxl that listed limited slip rear.
No convertible came stock with an LSD, youre right about that, and this was not one fo the cars I listed earlier.
IVe never had an 86-7 sport or an 88 gtu, but since they al have the same stuff an 89-90 gtus, and are alsought after, why wouldnt they have lsd? I might be wrong in saying they had a 4.3, but I bet I am not in saying they had lsd. Someone who knows more please correct me here.

Kevin, I have a 90 GXL. I know if my car has a LSD or not. I also have a 89 and 90 sales brochure that list LSD is not an option for GXL, thank you very much.
The scan is at www.marx7.org listed under articles or something
And AGAIN, 89-90 GXL dont have LSD. It's listed under factory shop manual, new car brochure.

Well, we're all learning somethign here. Maybe the only car with teh 4.3 lsd *was* the GTUs. I would still think the majority of sport/gtu models would have lsd. Consier also, guys, that these are all old cars, and the rears may have been replaced in time, or the LSD tags lost, and the only locatable part was a non lsd rear, or one of a different ratio.
Ill even go so far, Tmak, as to say that I may be wrong about the gxl's all having lsd from 86-90. BUt, Ill say that in dealing with 22 FC's to date(bought a T2 last night to part) *Ive never seen* a gxl w/o LSD. Ive personally changes the rears in 3 gxls, and all had lsd. I can verify that the autos had 3.9 lsd, because i changed one of those as well, and it threw the gearing way off when I installed the 4.1. Maybe we should consult the FC list for their experiences?

I believe the only car with 4.3 was the 89-90 GTUs.As for the gxl I have an 89' auto that is a parts car and the wheels spin in opposite directions not the same direction which means it doesn't have LSD right. My thinking is maybe some gxl s had it some did not or maybe 88 was the last year the gxl got LSD at least thats my theory.I really don't know.I only know about the ones I have and am just guessing on the others.

Ok, certainly at the least, the basic tip learned here is if your looking for a LSD from a parts car, spin one of the wheels before you get your tools out.
As to gas tanks, I know '89 has 18 gallons. Pulled one to retrofit to my '88 Vert'. This because I drive alot and like the flexability of watching a little longer for cheaper gas stations to save money.
I read somewhere that '91 didn't. Read above that a '90 didn't either. So, sounds like '89 was vintage year for gas tanks.
I wonder why? Must be a weight thing.

Well, each set has advantages and disadvantages. The numbers are a ratio between the speed of the driveshaft and the speed of the halfshafts (the axles). Lower numbers mean that the wheels are spinning more per rotation of the driveshaft while higher numbers mean that the wheels spin less for the same driveshaft rotation.
Bottom line is that 4.3 gears are great for quick acceleration while the 3.9's are designed for fuel economy (as the engine will be running at lower RPM's at a given MPH) and higher top speed.
There is a chart telling you what RPM's you'd be at for a few common speeds with each rear end at This Link . You'll also notice that these people carry ring and pinion sets and whole LSD's should someone be interested in dropping a grand for a new rear end...

HEY!! I just changed my rear diff lube TODAY (along w/transmission). While the rear end was up, i was thinking about this post. SO, low and behold, BOTH wheels SPUN THE SAME WAY. When you spin only one wheel, it spun, but the other one didn't!! This means it's a LSD right.... For all you disbelievers TRY IT!!! It'll take you no more that 5 mins and your hearts will be at rest .
ONCE AGAIN, my 1990 GXL HAS a LSD!!!

Yeah i am confused too. I tought i didnt have one b/c i have a "sales booklet" that came with the car that has all option/features/trim lines... It said i shouldnt have a LSD. But i was surprised as hell when the wheels DIDNT spin opposite!!!
Maybe it was a special option or put in within hte 11 yrs its been around.... coulda been a DEAL the salesman made with the original purchaser... WHATEVER! I'm just glad i DO have one now.
