Considering this is your friend's shop, I assume this price is atypically low.
What is the general opinion here ... is it better from a price/performance standpoint to have a shop build you custom pipes and you get your own muffler or to go with a RB or Apexi exhast?

Aside from the tuning of NA headers (whole different kettle of fish!) exhaust fabrication isn't rocket science. It's about experience, craftsmanship and component quality. The advantage of buying something from RB or whoever is that it's easy. You pay your money, they send it, you bolt it on. Easy. You know it'll fit, you know it won't suck. But you're paying extra for that ease, and you're paying extra for the brandname. The advantage of going custom is that you can pick the components you want and specify exactly how it all goes together. And cost of course! The trick is to find someone who knows their stuff, and that ain't always easy. There's nothing wrong with buying stuff off the shelf, as long as you aren't fooling yourself into thinking your money is buying you more performance than you can get from a custom exhaust.

mufflers??? why do you want mufflers! resonator pipes are the way to go. of course i have a slight advantage of the most of you by working at midas. i got bored and built an entire 2.5" exhaust from the DP back.
