Weird eletric problem on a 87 TII. doesn't startup

this hapened twice on my friend's s4 TII
here's the problem:
turn the key to position 2 and all lights go on as normal. the car is totally normal, radio working, door lights etc..
turn it to position 3 and everything goes bye bye.. the car dies. doesn't start. lights, radio everything shutsdown.
my friend also told me he heard a noise, but he can't describe it trough msn.. (he said it was like "tse" (maybe tss for english talking folks))
he also said that it made a little bit of white smoke, from the left side of the engine bay one of the times he turned the key to position 3 (at the same time it made the noise).

first I told him it could be the cpu connections going bye bye, but with the smoke and all.. I don't think so.

Im talking to him right now on msn, so any thing not clear enough just ask me.

Has he "played" with anything on the car lately?

yay a reply !! HI Wayne

first of all.. forget about that noise, it's that click U ear when U turn the key to position 2. (U also hear it if U remove and plug again the EGI fuse with key on position 2)

nop, the car is totally stock and he didn't change anything..

the car started afterwards but the things he done have nothing to do with it.. I think..
he played with the gears.
moved the car a few meters to put the engine under some light.
and then checked the battery.

then it started.. weird

The main relay? Is that what you're talking about clicking?

OK- I guess a gremlin, lol.

Not enough info to make an educated guess here, just keep an eye on things (like gauges), and if she does it again get back with us
