Wear rate?

A friend of mine just installed his new KYB AGX shocks/struts on his 1987 GXL on stock springs.

I was wondering if it was better to tell him to leave the adjusters in the firmest setting or the softest for longevity of the units, or if it doesn't matter. My understanding of how they work is that when you turn the adjusters, they simply allow more or less gas through as the piston compresses. Is this right?

No gas goes though the piston, only oil, and it won't really matter for wear, just set them up for the best performance and/or best comfort and be done with it.
