water thermo sensor hole

Well i kinda got a 3/8" plug in the hole for the water thermo sensor, dumb move I know but Ididn't know about the sensor until someone pointed it out to me. And now that I have the sensor I noticed that the thread and overall diamete is much smaller than the plug I put in. I don't understand how I could've got such a large plug in the water thermo sensor hole, could it just be that Mazda sent the wrogn size sensor or maybe the water pump metal is so soft I could just be able to hand turn a 3/8" plug (very easily I might add) into the hole? The part number on the sensor reads 8574-18-840, and I've checked with mazdatrix and that's the correct number. I'm pretty sure I'm f'ed up my water pump now but I just wanted to check here and see if I really did.
