Question Water Temp. Gauge Q?

I'm looking into puttin a water temp. gauge in the car. I see that there are a whole bunch to choose from! 60mm,80mm,52mm... blah, blah. There is also Electronic and Mechanical Which one would fit my '87 TII??? What do these measurements mean (52mm, etc)? I was interested in VDO gauges, because they are dark, and would blend in with the color scheme of the interior.
I appreciate your help. I'm going autox in a week and would feel so much better if I get this gauge installed by then.

Thanks

The size measurement defines the diameter of the gauge. I like 52mm for water/oil temp and oil pressure. I prefer the other gauges to be 60mm so they are more noticable.

You should never use mechanical gauges for water temp, oil temp, oil pressure, nitrous or fuel pressure. Lots of race tracks or race groups wont let you run the car with the previously mentioned hoses in the car. Its too much of a safety hazard if they broke.

VDO has inexpensive electric gauges, just get those.

Well, i installed it by the coolant Filler Neck, by the switch. It's simple really, i didn't have such easy luck though. Your supposed to drill it, and then thread it, but for some reason even after threading it, the sender wouldn't screw in, so we hammered it in, and put some epoxy to seal it. I'll post more pics tomorrow

I used my Thermostat Housing. But now, I am doing a TII Conversion and have access to the Water Pump Housing. I will be using this. It's far more accurate as to what temps are going on In the Motor, primarily b'c It's before the Thermostat.

An easier way, plus so you dont damage any permanate parts, is to cut about 1.5in out of the rad hose. Get a pipe, put that in there and then clamp the hoses down. Tap the pipe for the sending unit. Greddy sells something like this for like 40$.

Here's an alternative on where to mount it. Read HAILERS' posts in this thread:

https://www.rx7club.com/forum/showth...hreadid=203915

I think that's how I'm going to install my temp sender.

I drilled and tapped mine in the water pump housing. You have to be a little more careful installing it but it is much more accurate place to install the sender.
