The pumps are interchangable, the housings that hold the pump however are quite different. Obviously, the s5 has a plastic tstat/filler elbow, and has a 90 degree bend on the rear outlet, also, the angles of the lower inlet are different, I know when i tried to fit a s4 on my s5 that it hit the OMP, perhaps there's enough room on the s4, but I can't be sure.

The S5 water pump has an extra mounting bolt, thus, the flanges are quite different.
Can't bolt an S5 pump onto an S4, or vice versa, you wouldn't be able to bolt the bottom on.
Can't bolt an S4 housing onto an S5 block, s4 housing hits the MOP.

That's interesting to know. Guess my s5 turbo had a s4 waterpump on it? Not sure, but it cleared the OMP, and i just pulled the guts out and bolted it to my s4 without a hitch. Guess I should've known, that whole engine was one big mess.
Sorry for the misinformation, didn't think even the waterpump was screwed on that block!
