walbro got LOUD... a/f getting lean. bad pump?

well i have had my walbro for like 4 years.. filters were changed then.

over the past few weeks it has been getting so loud... loud to the point of i can hear it from like 20 feet away from the car, even with a full tank of gas.

yes i have a wideband... and a e6k

tonight my a/f went crazy lean under boost. like 17:1
its tuned to 11.4:1 under boost.... and has been fine till tonight.

i pulled into a gas station.

car idles like normal...
base fuel pressure checked out to 42... and 30 something under vaccume of idle.
cant check fuel pressure under boost cuz of where the gauge is mounted.
no vac leaks.. full vaccume.

so ya think my pump is going bad... well went bad?
think my fuel filters are clogged or maybe the pickup boot is clogged? it has been 4 years... man now that i think of it... man 4 years, its time to check them.

what else should i check first?

thanks

*ahem*

Your fuel pump is making horrible noises.

Your A/F is going lean.

Think there's a good clue here?

Just check the whole system. Replace the high pressure fuel filter, clean the low pressure fuel filter, check the wiring to the pump, prepare to replace the pump, and stay the **** out of boost until you solve it.

there is just the sock pump pickup filter on the pump... and the filter on the firewall in the engine bay right? thats the only two i know of.

i plan to check them tomarrow.

i got into boost a little and noticed the a/f... there was no signs of problems till tonight other then the pump volume, and the pump volume is why i have been watching the wideband so closely.

my post was not to be a noob and ask if i can still boost it... or to say that i have been even tho there is a problem.

this post was to get input on what others suggest i check while im in there trouble shooting this.

anyone have a walbro or supra pump for sale?

It is my observation that when ANY fuel pump gets louder than usual, it is about to go out, and also is not performing 100%. My denali goes through fuelpumps every few months (a weakness of later model GM trucks) and I always can tell when it's coming.

IN fact, I recently did a custom walbro install in it because the replacement stockers seem to be so loud (even when new) and don't last long at all.

I had the SAME problem with my GTUs/TII (I MISS YOU). I didnt have a wideband but I could tell the car was not running right. The pump is dead... I replaced my fuel filter and the problem continued so I replaced the pump and all was good after that. Fuel pressure (dont remember numbers) were slightly lower under no load (underhood pressure gauge). Mine was caused by a bad tank of gas. I drained out the gas to find that, when you let what I drained sit, the water would seperate out... about 60% gas 40% water. Thats what I get for buying premium from a gas station that probably hasnt sold it in years. Also when the walbro went in the first time my tank was clean... durning the replacement there was SAND in the bottom of my tank (not much but still) and a small amount of rust. So in short... replace the pump... replace all filters... and buy gas from a station that regularly sells premium

i replaced the filters and the sound of the pump went down to how it was when i got it.

but its still going lean.

Weird thing is.... today when it was warm out the car did fine... no problems. now that its 60F out its doing it again... weird. it has to be the pump tho... there is nothing else

Actually, that's usually from getting gas shortly after a tanker has filled up the tanks (and whipped all the sediment into the mix).

well i checked voltage at the pump today and it showed a two volt drop from the battery voltage.

I rewired it using a relay and using the haltech fuel pump power wire to switch the relay.

now im getting full voltage to the pump.

im gonna break down and order a pump... it has to be the pump.

i have been driving with less than a 1/4 tank and the pump is 4 years old, and so was my fuel filter. my research on here has shown that any of these things will cause a walbro to over heat and go bad.

it flows enough to handle idle and vaccume driving... but when the pressure goes up im guessing the pump cant handle it... its just worn out i guess.

ill post my finidngs after replacing the pump.
