VIN # check doesn't match what the car is

Hey, I just bought an 87 RX7 and we just did a free Carfax check on it. Well the guy we bought it from (on Ebay) said it was a non turbo and it is per say...it has the 13b motor in it and it doesn't have any of the turbo options that I can tell so far. When we ran the Carfax report the VIN number came up as an 87 RX7 TURBO....has anyone else had that problem? We are thinking maybe the guy did an engine swap and it might have been a turbo at one point. Is there any way to tell if it is a turbo? It does have the electrical problem where if you load the electrical system the car had the jerking/bucking hesitation. Could an engine swap have started that problem? Any help I could get on this would be great. Thanks.

Carfax is often wrong. what is the VIN?

JM1FC331

or

JM1FC332

If it is two, it came from the factory with a turbo motor.

Your electrical problem suggests a bad battery and Alt. What voltage does your voltmeter read when this happens.

Anything under 12.6 volts is bad and suggests that there is a problem with the alt.

My voltimeter in the car reads 13 but we don't know if it is correct.

it can also be bad/loose/dirty connections at the battery, starter, underhood fusebox and the b+ on the alt. i'm seeing 14v+ at the ecu in my fc on the stock wiring

well we know it's not the battery connections because we just replaced those with brand new ones. I will have to check on the other connections. I'm starting to believe that it's the alternator because I've heard it from two people on here and a friend said the same thing here.

That sucks, That means higher insurance for you when you give that VIN to your insurance company.

Is that true for all FC's?

I have been looking for the rear end parts in junk yards and I have found a bunch of obviously N/A cars, and a couple TII cars, of course, I know the TII cars by the entire engine, tranny, drvie shaft, differential, Half shafts, and brakes are all GONE! Of course, the ladder of those parts are what I need still....

occasionally I've found cars with missing fenders/badging and the engine is gone, but they have the tranny, and five-lug hubs, and rear disc brakes. But I don't know if that's the TII or not. Hopefully this vin code is accurate for all FC's....
