The coupe door weighs about 18 lbs less than the convertible door.
The stock door panel that has the AC Vent has to open out about 15 degrees in order to clear before it goes up.
On this black vert the door panel has been streamlined so not it now it only has to open out less than 5 degrees before it goes up.
The gas struts in this kit have the proper pressure that it doesnt take much to go up. All you have to do is open the door and place your hand underneath the door panel and help it for about 3 inches on the rise then the gas strut takes over .. you can practically let go of the door and it goes up by itself. and this is all happening in the sitting position.
Your bad experience has been with the Honda Universal kits because as you mentioned above your friend had it on his CIVIC that are inferior to this one.. My kit was specifically designed for the FC... IT IS NOT A UNIVERSAL KIT.

Contrary to the prior comment, it is easier to get out of a Delorean when parked close to some thing than with a conventional door car. They only need 12 inches of space to fully open. Ever try getting into any other car with only 12 inches of space? The thickness of the door alone reduces it to about 6 inches.

Dude lets not sweat it.... If everyone had such good taste as us then you would not have one clean tastefully modded fc...

I don't think its a bad mod - if you have great paint and a straight body to begin with...
I have a vert and the same pics keep coming up when I search for door kits... that black vert with the top that looks like *** and a red one with some ghetto deep **** seat covers.
I decided that door kits are made to accentuate your car - or draw attention to what a piece of **** it is.

Who did your kit? What was the price if you dont mind me asking? im close enough to miami that if they could do the install early in the day or something i could get it done in miami and still be back in tampa the same day.

It's fun parking a DeLorean stupidly close to other cars and then watching the confusing...

Anyhoo, I'd rather see gullwing doors opposed to scissor doors on an FC. Just that much better lookin IMO. Plus, i don't think too many ricers with modded doors are going gullwing stye, so it'd be more unique.

not a possibility on 99.9999% of cars. if you look at the way the door works, it uses half of the roof as part of the door, thats where most of the stuctural integrity lies. if you look at most doors of any other car, most of the weight is in the middle of the door, and uses 2 somewhat flimsy hinges for operation. and also, if you look at the top of the door, you see how flimsy and weak the metal is? try opening a door from that........................................hope your family has good life insurance........

i know they make universal 120 degree opening Vertical door kits how about mount on back wards so at the push of a buttom you have suicide vertical doors that get up and out of your way. (should be combind with a targa top and widebody.)

I guess if you didn't care if you were hit from the side by some idiot driving through a red light, and didn't care if the door rolled into the passengers compartment when that happens... when then maybe Lambo doors might be a choice for you.

I've been considering this off and on for a lot of years and have a basic plan of how it can be done.
First, create a metal frame inside the roof which replaces the existing sheet metal structure. The frame must have two cutouts for the doors and a solid mounting area for a torsion bar and gas strut. Look at the structure of the DeLorean for clues.
Tack weld the door to the body and then cut out the inner door panel. Create a metal frame to support the door, with solid supports up the side that tie into the roof structure. You probably won't be able to use the FC window.
Gut the inside of the door.
Mount your hinge on the inside of the roof to tie the inner structure of the door to the roof frame.
Now cut the tacks, and cut the metal of the roof out.
You should now have a gull wing door.
The details now are latches, creating a torsion bar system to assist the door and mounting a gas strut.
