my fiancee and I have 2 GTUs (mine is Turbo) and now she wants a vert too.......The vert is specially made as a VERT (as opposed to chopped top coupes) and are therefore reinforced. From what Icemark says there is a 1% rigidity difference between the coupe and the vert when the top is up. If we end up finding an S5 vert we will do the TII swap and it will be our weekend cruiser.......I'd go with an S5 vert.

I've taken the vert to an autocross twice & each time came away knowing that the car was more than enough for my needs. This was in stock form. Sure I'd like to go like the cobras with the v8's or the nsx's but really, who NEEDS 500hp to go into a 20-40mph corner? I was in 2 gear all around the cones(6000rpms) with the exception of a few short "straight away" that could have required an extra few horses but otherwise I still had a blast. Take note. Nothing overheated that day, the brakes never faded it was bullet proof. I was impressed. Then the very same weekend I took it down hwy 1 along the coast. That was a stunner. Top down, music coming from 6 speakers, and smelling the ocean in 3D. I've also gone to L.A. witht the sun setting to the right of me and a full moon to my left rising all due to a drop top. Ther's no comparison. I like options. I hate to be strapped to just one choice when I can have both. Then later, if you want too, upgrade the vert. It'll alway's be "enough" of a car for most peoples needs with the exception of a few racers on this planet. AutoX is a personal prusuit against the clock & not others. Just my two cents. Good luck.

Yea I agree. IMO a vert is the fugliest rx7 ever made. With the top down its ok but still fugly. With the top up damn its too fugly to look at.

Vert= worst of all worlds. Heavy fat big, weak NA engine, fugly looks.

Some of you are debating about the suspension being better on a stock vert. Well its not nearly as rigid as a coupe because as you can tell the whole top is missing. If you going to race it why would you even keep the stock suspension thats almost 20 years old?

I saw a sport would be best for racing, its light, 4 pot brakes, TII suspension, no sunroof makes the chasis more rigid.

I dont even see why the 2 cars are being compared but ive personally found that more verts are in better condition than coupes i guess because the verts have always been reverred as collectors items and toys rather than the average coupe. This is pretty much the only reason i got mine because it was spotless and it was impossible for me to locate an unmolested coupe here in texas. Its one of the most solid cars ive ever owned and the brakes are phenomenal. I get lots of looks with the top down and its nice to have the option of dropping a top( this is my first convertible). Id also like to say among the s5's that i hate the automatic seat belts on the coupes, you dont have that with the verts. I know my excuses are pretty lame but they were selling points for me. I picked mine up with 96k and not a single scratch or mark for 4k. You cant get a deal like that anywhere else. And it runs like new too, like i said in the beginning i found alot more well pampered verts than i did coupes. I wanted a coupe at first because my first 2 rx7s were coupes( fb's) and i loved how they felt and i was very skiddish when i first looked at this vert i got but once i drove it and felt how fresh it felt and all i grabbed it. Its something that doctors and rich people respect and people my age also respect, you cant get that out of just any car. Plus down the road i feel mine will be worth more than the average coupe. And the headrest speakers are just too cool But thats all just my opinions on it and in the end i went with the vert.

This fat pig crap is a little ridiclous, in 89 the GTU weighed 2800lbs and the vert weighed 3045lbs. 245lbs you guys are smoking crack.

thats why the gtus dont have ****. I want my power windows, leather seats, power mirrors, and sorround speakers. I want the ability to drop the top and if it gets too hot I can just put it up and turn the ac on. And if a vert owner wanted a coupe they could simply sell it and buy a tii.

hmm i dont know,so the vert is just as rigid as a gxl and it has better breaks? and i thought the gxl had the same sway bars as the t2?

what can i say, a vert is a vert.

ok never seen/driven a na vert so i cant coment on that but when it comes to the tII´s i think they are quite comparable. but the vert has some pro´s

1, girls often prefer verts (no matter what make/model)
2, verts have a better resale value
3, verts are often better taken care off
4, vets normaly arent expected to be fast wich makes i alot of fun to race others not knowing the power of rotarys

OK, I've never had either on a track of any kind so..... but I did have the 'vert at Deals Gap and I never had a problem keeping up with anyones 3rd gen or NA/Turbo 2nd gen that was in front of me when we were making runs or any problems braking as needed. When I ran by myself it was even more impressive how well it handled. If there had been any straight roads instead of the 314 turns in 11 miles, power would have been nice but... My Turbo I've had for 5 years and the 'vert only 6 months. The Turbo brakes better, acceleration and top end is a given but I swear the 'vert handles damn close to it. If nothing else it's a damn blast to drive with the top down and stereo on. As far as looks, personal taste I suppose. I love driving both and I think both look great. As far as the original question... buy both and have fun!

Yea, what he said. My T2 will kick the vert's *** but for just cruising, it's all 'vert. By the way both are in great shape and I get 10 compliments on the vert for every 1 for the T2 (if that kind of thing matters to you)

And 88 non P-package verts only weighed 2850- the same as a 10thAE or almost any S5 non turbo coupe

yeah I used to hear all the ricers say that my vert was to heavy and under powered. So I did a complete t2 swap. Then I heard that it still was under powered because it was 100-200lbs heavier than a t2. So now I dropped a custom built PT67GTP turbo inner. So what excuses do the masses have now on the vert. No comparison between turbo'd vert and turbo'd coupe. Its vert all the way. Just get over it, any 2nd gen NA is a POS and neither the NA vert or the NA coupe are fast by any means.

TII vert's are fun as hell, if you got a vert, swap a TII drivetrain into it, it's the best of both worlds by all means.

I wouldn't say he clearly asked for a track car, he asked for a car that can pull both track and street driving duties. While I agree that for a track only car the coupe is better because its lighter, either car is a great choice for a car thats going to be seeing both track and street. The coupe would probably be better on the track, but IMO the vert would be better for a desert cruise. It really depends on whether the car will be mainly a track car or a street car.

And I think you're grossly overestimating the weight on the "fat pig" vert...its only ~200 lbs heavier than most coupes. I still don't understand everyone's obsession with stripping their cars...unless its a track only car I don't see the point. And the FC isn't all that light of a car to begin with...if you're looking for a super lightweight platform I would look elsewhere. But to each their own...
