vert hardtop removal

Hi Folks.

I'm a new owner of a nice convertible. To my knowledge the middle-section of the top can be removed seperatly. But how? Do I need special tools, because it doesnt seem to just come of easily.

thanks,

Harry

There is the two things that latch up to the windshield frame. You have to push in the button in the front of the lever, then pull the lever down. Do that on both sides. On the back part of the targa piece, there is two more small levers, with orange things on the end, push those up to free up the targa piece, and you should be good to go.

Wait a minute, you also have one more lever, you push that one and slide it toward the back.

So I guess I'll have to find those 'orange things' next
The other buttons/levers etc. I already know.

You might not see the orange releases if the top has the winter mode caps on, as they cover the rear latches at the targa section.

Thumbs up done

Ok. Did it successfully. But wasnt that easy. If you believe it or not, the "orange lever" was secured by a screw on both sides which were secured by glew! Wasnt that easy to remove them. Thats why I didnt "found" the lever by myself (well I did, but it didnt work). But I guess that was by factory and my vert never had the hardtop removed ever. So I was the first one!

greez

There's an easier way:

1) Retract top until the "hard targa section" is facing vertical (straight up)
2) Remove the "hinge covers" by pushing in the "pop-out rivet" buttons. If you don't have the hinge covers, you can buy them from Mazda. A picture of what they look like is below.
3) Push main targa release button so hardtop moves up & down freely.
4) Push hingle release buttons on one side and slightly pull hinge out of joint.
5) Walk to other side & push hinge release button and then pull top out
6) Place top in Mazda hardtop protector bag (get them on ebay or rx-7 parts websites if you don't have one.) The bag has "feet" that prevent the top from being damaged while in the trunk and lift-feet that keep the middle from sagging while in the trunk if you put stuff on top of it.
7) Place hardtop bag in trunk.
8) Snap boot cover in place over snaps (if you don't have the boot cover, but that from ebay or several rx-7 parts websites).
