Vert Hard top?

Man, i would LOVE! to have a vert, and they arnt too hard to come by, but one thing, i HATE the soft top, they just look cheesy to me, no offense to anyone on here. But i was wondering if anyone has seen a hard top, maybe a good FG one or something along those lines. I know it would be more of a pita to remove the hard top when i wanted to vert around, but i think it would look so much better. Remove that heavy vert **** and TII swap it, , thats what the hell im talking about.

Thanks guys.

If you find one let me know! But I think you are searching for the holy grail.

Yeah, i agree with you, maybe we should get a poll up to see how many people would want one, and then see if a FG fab shop will work with us. Anyone have any suggestions?

This idea came up a long time ago and we discussed a few options. Nothing ever came of it. If we could search you would be able to find the old thread. I think it covered all of the pros and cons and the best way to go about making it. Preaty sure we decided that using the stock hard top section and adding on a hard section to replace the soft section of the stock setup would be the easiest. A full fiberglass piece would be the lightest, but would reduce some stiffness in the chassis. Once the search function is up again; take a look. Or you could start going through the pages; you might find it by Sunday!

haha, i know, i tried to search, damn 'disabled' bs. Yeah, well, if i had a vert, i would have to slap a 4pt roll cage in there reguardless, so im not too worried about chassis stiffness. Its just ideas, i dont even own a vert, im just weighing the options because i would love to have one.

Thanks

I was real big on this idea before.
What I came up with was a plan to replace to soft top section with a glass or CF piece, that would accept the stock Targa hard top. This would permit removing the targa top separately. It could use the stock rear glass (heated) or a big weight savings could be had by using a Lexan rear window.
I have a trashed softtop we use for a mold by forming glass onto it, in place, then trim the mold as desired.
If we have any glass or CF experts, I am still interested.

There might be one made before you know it.

It is the rear section and allow you to keep the softtop on the car in the stored position. The glass is bigger than the standard vert rear window. Attachments to the car will be by "frankenstein bolts."
I'm debating about adding an integrated roll bar.

Depending on interest, I might make a mold.

I bought another project car, so my priorities have shifted to the time being. When I'm done I'll post pics and info.

There is a rear roll bar integrated with the factory soft-top section.

I know we talked a lot about this a while back, but remind me why we want a fiberglass top???

I mean other than perhaps a bigger rear window or a slight styling modification, there would be no reason for the top. The factory top is lined (unlike most convertibles) and reasonably tight and weather resistant.

A hard top like the miata might make our verts legal in some racing classes. Other than that; I'll keep the stocker.

Well, I personally think that soft tops look terrible, and like "Rotorific" said, we were cruising to class and saw a miata hard top and that **** looks great. Pretty much, its just the best of all worlds to me, sleak hard top (which can be painted any color), with the option to take it down and feel the breeze in the summer time pickin' up hoes.... err.. .yeah.

My soft top is trashed and I would rather make a hardtop, for looks, cost, sound, stiffness (maybe?). Costwise the materials will be cheaper but obviously more time consuming. For me ,messing about in my RX-7s is a hobby that I dump all sorts if time into, so man-hours is not a factor.

Perhaps the problem for me is that once I get an idea in my head to try somthing, it stays there until I do it or until I'm lobotomized. whichever comes first.
