Vert Aftermarket Stereos (Post Your Pics)
I am eventually going to be replacing my verts stock system with much better and WORKING system. What have vert owners done in terms of aftermarket replacements and placement of extra amps\subs\etc. We don't have the storage bins that coupes have so there isn't a huge ammount of space in these verts for extra stuff. Anyone thrown stuff in the trunk and still had room to store the targa section?
I plan to relocate my battery to the trunk and maybe at some point have a nos shot in there. I had considered some bazooka tubes but I've never been a big fan of them.
So yeah, please post pics of your vert setups please.

The biggest challenge is 1) getting the OEM headrest speakers to work and 2) getting 6 channels to work with a 4 channel stereo/head unit.
The storage bin holes are still there and most vert owners put 1-2 subs in those holes with a custom box. Amps can be mounted in the trunk horizonally agains the divider wall, next to the sub, or on a customer tanue / spare tire cover.
For relocation I'd move the spare tire into the trunk area (the holes still there for it behind the plastic cover back there) or go with no spare & fix-a-flat spraycan. Battery would do best in the passengers side storage bin hole. The spare tire mount also helps stiffen the car, so don't remove it. I also wouldn't cut-up the sparetire cover.

Currently my vert's system comprises a Clarion CD/tuner, a 4x50Wrms amplifier under the rear deck, 4" 2-way coaxials in the stock dash locations, 6" 2-way coaxials in the stock door locations and the stock headrest speakers. The head unit front channels drive the 4" coaxials, the head unit rear channels drive the headrest speakers wired in series pairs, the amp front channels drive the 6" coaxials and the amp rear channels are unused, waiting for me to pull finger and build a box for the 8" sub I have sitting in the garage. The amp is mounted on a shelf made from MDF that's bolted into the area under the rear deck behind the left seat. This just fitted in with the spare wheel is still in place. Other than the detachable-face head unit, no stereo gear is visible, which is just how I like it.
The sub will go into a professionally designed (and amateurishly built) 4th-order bandpass box, which has a sealed chamber behind the speaker and a vented chamber in front of it. This box will sit in the boot. So that the sound is transferred into the cabin more efficiently, the tuned-length port will be mounted partly outside the box and poke though a hole cut in the plastic lining the front of the boot. The box is designed to produce a broad range of sub-bass notes effectively rather than making just one note really loud.
The headrest speakers are connected up to the head unit mostly using the car's original wiring. The stock headrest speaker amp is normally fed from the stock front speaker wires, so I connected the head unit's rear channels to these wires, removed the stock headrest speaker amp, and used jumper wires on the amp's plugs to complete the circuits to the headrest speakers. I had run new wires to the front speakers, so the stock front speaker wires now only feed the headrest speakers. The two left speakers are wired in series with each other, as are the two right speakers. This doubles the impedance seen by the amp, and hence halves the power each speaker handles. The idea was to stop them from being too dominant and also protect the small 80's speakers from modern head unit power, but as it turned out I can barely hear them over the amplified door speakers. I'm going to rewire them so that the just driver's speakers are connected to see if they sound better with double the power sent to them.

i placed a kenwood in my car about a month ago and triple checked all the wring when i installed it, now i have this problem when i headlights are on and i hit the brakes the radio shuts off then comes back on... weird isnt it

If you look just at the top of the speakers, you can see a piece of wood covered by cloth that makes for a nice solid and flush mount for the speakers on the spare tire cover and it increases the rigidity of the cover. The backside of the cloth covered wood (in the front) is angled to match the receding angle at the top. There is also a piece of ply on the backside. My wind deflector no longer folds all the down, but I never put it down anyways. Looks, sounds and works great btw. My sub and amps are loctaed under the tray as in the pics above. I carry no spare, just a can of 'tire goo' and hope.
My 6-disc mp3 changer is installed in the glovebox.

sounds like you're drawing too much power. you may wanna get an amp to power the rear speakers. this happened to me with my pioneer and i had the music blasting (busta rhymes cd btw). got the amp and it was fixed.

We had a similar problem. (Headlights dim to the beat, etc.) Get a 1 Farad capacitor to go between the battery and the amp to help even out the draw. This worked fine when we were running 1600 watts through the two 12 in. subs. We are about to upgrade to 3000 watts through three 10 in Kickers in a custom box in the trunk. We may have to up size of the capacitor. (I hope not.) BTW: Has anyone discovered how to either upgrade to a beefier alternator, or to add another to a NA 91 Vert?

what he said. 3rd gen alt is the perfect upgrade. there's a forum member who was selling the upgrade kits but it's over now. his sn is silverrotor and look for his thread and it'll tell you how to wire it to the fc. alot of people bought his kit and they were happy with the results.

Thanks for the tip, Alex6969 and TitosToy. 3rd gen alternator went in with minimal hassles and REALLY works well. Everything runs better, including the car. Great advice. Spent the holiday doing Pimp My Ride. Pics to follow. 2 of the 3 subs are in, and lookin' mighty fine. It will definately pass the NBA dress code. Pics following soon.

i am running a sony deck and a power accoustics amp along with a type R alpine 10" my box was origonalli a rectanguler box measering 23"L X 11"W X 11"H but you will have to trim on sid so it will end up a pentagon shape

hey, i'm wondering how in the heck ya'll fit 6" speakers into the doors. doesn't really matter right now cause i already got my stuff in. i'll see about a pic or three once i get my car back. i've got boston acoustics components in the doors(5.25"), 4.whatever" coaxials under the dash, and a set of add on tweeters on the dash. powered by a JVC aresenal head unit. nothing special but i like it

OK, I know this is going to make me look like a real dumass but I thought the spare in a vert went where it does in a coupe. I bought the 'vert last fall and I thought the P.O. pulled the spare to fit a sub amp in the rear. This post implies that the spare is behind the seats and under the cover behind them. That true?
