v mount fab

Alright so getting ready for my vmount install and i am sizing up angles, when i notice there is a tube in the way.I mean like directly where i want this radiator to go. Some sort of front end brace that holds the horns and stock oil cooler in place. Do any of you that run vmounts simply cut this bar out and move it forward or backwards? Seems like you can it backwards and retain the same piece of tubing as the frame shrinks in about 1/4 on each side. Or you could cut it out and make a new piece and move it forward.

also what radiators are you running. I was looking at turn the stock style rad sideways and cutting off the mounting tabs and reangling one of the coolant outlets but it seems like alot of work to do that to a already expensive radiator.

Either way i am looking to see what other people have done with this.

thanks
Ben

You can cut that piece out, but you will need to make a frame to replace it as it adds structural rigidity to the front of the frame. The best V-mounts I have seen have made a whole subframe out of tubular aluminum in which the rad and intercooler mounts. This subframe them picks up the stock bumper support and other mounting areas in the front of the car, tying it together.

wasnt that the kit that placed the lower radiator neck super close to the ground... or was that something else?

haha well i think i will be fabbing these ditties up myself so i will be careful about ground clearance since off track excursions do happen and i dont want that to end my day.

still leaves the radiator as a question. i can obviously run piping to the necks but it seems long and a good many unneeded angles. problem i find when looking at peoples v mounts all they show is the top, which does me no good

I think it is best to have a custom radiator made to fit your application.

Here are some pics:

FYI the system will have less pressure drop if the intercooler pipes are as straight as possible, like you see on the cars owned by Blue TII and Titanium TT. Less pressure drop means faster boost rise and usually less heat for a given boost level.

Also, make sure you use rubber isolators when mounting the heat exchangers so they don't crack from vibrations.

An electric fan is usually mounted to the back side of the radiator, so that is why you would not see it in the pictures. Puller fans work much better than pusher fans.

I have an rx7store modified koyo in my FD (I know it's a different application) But it is built very very well and the v-mount setup is sturdy as hell. PM Jason at the rx7store and see if he can make you one for an FC.
