Used Rotor Housing: Opinions needed..plz

This just arrived yesterday. I need some feedback on how useable this housing is?

I was told the housing was in great shape and had less than an inch of chrome flaking

There is a line of wear that just about goes around the housing

I've got a couple more pics that I need to get uploaded. I'm also concerned about wear around and above the trailing plug hole. It has almost a serrated surface to it. Not cuts or scars from foreign object. But it is definitely not flat and even.

I'm assuming this will need to be taken to a machine shop. That can't be good for water jacket seals

Whats up with the exhaust port? Did you mark it for porting?

This is how it looks out of the box it was shipped in. It was marked for porting by a previous owner.

Also the sides that seal against the irons are painted silver with brush on paint. The paint went on while the iron was dirty. Oh and it also has one of the two top threaded holes with a broken bolt in it. IIRC those top threads are for spiders nest. The paint came after the bolt was broken, as there is paint on the broken part of the bolt. Also it appears that the paint came after the damage to the top. The paint is covering the deformed section. I'd think if it was damaged in shipping that the actual paint would have signs of chipping or scrapping.

I've got more pics but was having trouble getting them posted. I'll have them up soon as I can..

I'd just run the apex seals backwards, tips facing the front of the motor. I've done it on a few motors that I had minor flaking. But in all honesty I am way to picky and would always try to get no flaking or damage.

I would never put it on a turbo engine

on a non turbo engine you could maybe use it but it would be ghetto. it might flood and be down on power

Thanks for the feedback...
It was intended for a turbo rebuild. I'm waiting to hear back from the seller. Hopefully it all gets resolved in PMs and this thread goes away.

Any cracks around the spark plug holes? I'd bet money that those are 100k mile plus housings. Any deformities or damage in the...uh...can't think of the name...big o-ring/seal that goes around the outside of the edge by the water jacket area?

Actual spark plug holes look ok. Leading has one small chip on it. What I am concerned about is the serrated surface of the chrome around and above the trailing plug hole.

I left the USB connection for my camera in storage with the parts so I can't upload pics tonight. I've got the housing with me and took a shot with my phone camera, not the best quality but it hopefully shows what I'm speaking of.

Big outside area of jacket seal...o-ring. You mean the dowel rod thingies? I can't tell if there are cracks around those, the silver paint is over the surface.

I can't say much for mileage on them. The seller gave the typical spiel about JDM and 30k-50k, but he was open about not knowing actual mileage.

My luck so far with buying on this forum has been somewhat similar so far. 1 out of 4 of my so far purchases were not as described and yielded in a useless purchase of $200. :/

Then it looks like this housing is only good for porting practice.

agreed. Paint the entire housing your color of choice and insert rotor clock for display purposes. That's all its good for.

Who knows maybe that was originally going to happen. A previous owner was going to do some port practicing, then decided to sell it. Somewhere along the way it ended up with silver paint over the dirt and for sale.

Request for full refund has been sent, I'm just waiting for a response. I'd rather the seller paint it the color of his choice. Hopefully this doesn't end up in Bad Guy section. Though maybe things should end up there given that I was told it was in alot different condition than it is.

I wouldn't use that housing. I wouldn't even try to sell that housing. Next time make sure you get some good pics of it before you buy. No one wins in this situation.

You would like to think that he may have just sent you the wrong housing by accident. Good luck with the refund!

^^I kind of doubt the wrong housing shipped hypothesis; I've never had to rebuild myself (12 years and counting, knock on wood!), and even I know from the OP's photo's and years of seeing people's builds and projects on here that a housing like that isn't good for anything except a conversation piece. Although the seller may not have known.

Good luck, hope you get your refund.

Agreed on everything you said. I saw a couple pics of the housing, his description of it was what great condition it is in, he wouldn't budge on price and he has a good seller rating. In hindsight I needed better pictures and a more honest description.

I've got PMs of "inaccurate" description of it's condition. We'll see how this plays out. Very unfortunate for both of us...to say the least.

Ok, got a few more pics

Serrated surface I was referring to

More of the serrated surface and also a cut in the step area, I'm assuming soon to start flaking

Broken bolt

I think I understand what you mean about water jacket deformations or damage

Again I'll have to get pics up, but it looks like beneath the surface of the paint where the jacket makes contact with the housing. It looks erroded.
